Happily welcoming Tennessee to Athens this Friday to start conference play.
Tennessee dropped one to Wright State on Sunday, which also is the team that beat the Diamond Dawgs during their opening three game series to start the season. To say the least, the Hillbillies aren’t taking the post-Vitello era in stride. Just peep the comments on this Twix.

Let’s make the pitching clean and feed the trees, the gaps, and sh*t-posting this weekend in Athens.
That 70 number woulda, shoulda, coulda been higher with a ton LOB during that time period, UGA baseball weekend series pitching staff has potential to be really good, arm health not withstanding…UGA baseball could be tested, when opposition visits Foley Field with a lineup who go deep…GO DAWGS!!
I’m curious to see how the Dawgs respond to tougher competition in league play. Haven’t watched every game but on the ones I did watch they almost seemed uninterested at times. Any updates on Kenny Ishikawa?
Kenny was scheduled to pitch last Sunday until the rain delay and Wes Johnson said he decided not to push bringing him back. Was going to have him pitch a simulated game this week instead. I hope that means he will be back for the series against the Vols.
Nothing bucks like a Big Orange
The question is how improved is the starting pitching. Getting Ishikawa back as the Saturday starter is key. He has an edge to him that I like on the mound. Aoki strikes out a lot of batters but he doesn’t seem to have dominating stuff. I worry he will get hit by SEC lineups and is better suited for the bullpen like he was doing before Ishikawa got hurt. Vigue has looked good as the Sunday guy, but Volchko may just be a middle of the road Friday guy by SEC standards. I was hoping he would look more dominant.
Collectively, the starters seem better than what we had last year, but at this point it still feels like the Diamond Dogs will need to average about 7 runs a game to win consistently. Can they hit on the road this year and will the bats brought in to hit more for average work out? Hopefully, they won’t have to rely on the long ball as much as last year. I won’t complain about leading college baseball in HRs though. What is Wes supposed to do? Tell them to stop hitting it out of the park…lol?
