Wednesday Wondering: Is Atlanta Cursed?

Not the town, per se, but the sports teams.

And…

I’m not sure about the Hawks, as I haven’t followed NBA Basketball since the days of Michael Jordan, however long ago that was. Atlanta United has taken a backslide. Georgia Tech basketball is the worst it’s been in recent memory (giggle). In general, the Atlanta professional sports product has recently left much to be desired, and the Braves had, at one time, been the lone shining spot in local pro sports that you could rely on to at least be decent.

But with the team’s focus less on the diamond and more about expanding the Battery into a multi-functional living space, America’s Team has become just another casualty in Atlanta sports lore.

So for today’s wondering…is Atlanta vexed as a sports town? Is it piss poor management, mediocre expectations from fans for performance, or because it’s just background noise for an expensive night out on the town?

Penny for your thoughts.

  1. I don’t know if the Braves are paying the Baseball gods for 2021 or for leaving downtown or what. The last two seasons have been horrible as far as injuries go. This season looks like more of the same and AA didn’t plan well for it in regards to the pitching staff. He is relying WAY to much on a group that are all coming back from some type of injury. I think ownership is too cheap as well because there should have been a starting pitcher acquisition during the off season.

Now Profar is gone again for PEDs. What a maroon! On the bright side there is $15 million they won’t have to pay out this season so hopefully they will use that for pitching help and another DH option. If I’m them I don’t release Profar until next year since it is likely there will be a lockout and they can wait and see if they have to pay the entire salary next year anyway.

  2. All of the above unfortunately. Bad owners, crappy management, fan apathy. At least we can’t blame Bobo.

  3. The Barves sold their souls for 2021 and the schadenfreude will only continue. Profar had so many red flags that AA should have never signed him but apparently he was a bargain…
I’ve always been a big Braves fan, from the shitty 80s to present. Some of the personnel moves AA keeps doing/not doing are befuddling. I’m already looking forward to football season.

  4. The Braves are a story of bad decisions. Freddie gets about 60 more hits a year than Olsen, otherwise they are comparable. Sean Murphy , another terrible decision & trade.
    I could go on.

  5. The Braves can’t decide if they want to be the Dodgers or the Nationals. Instead, they just try to squeeze as much blood as possible out of the Battery (parking rates for a normal day there are outrageous).

The Falcons haven’t gotten the QB right since Matt Ryan. The NFL is a QB driven league, and you play with one arm tied behind your back if you don’t have at least a good player there.

The Hawks are still in Atlanta? Who knew?

Atlanta United? Good grief. They have turned into a mess after that one great season.

    Georgia tech? Hahahahahahahahahahahaha!

  6. In other ATL “professional” sports news, per The Athletic, “Last week, the Hawks announced a partnership with the famous Atlanta strip club, which is sponsoring “Magic City Night” for the team’s March 16 game against the Orlando Magic”. According to the author, Magic City is a titty bar with great wings & is allegedly some sort of cultural & community hub for the inner city. Really can’t make this shit up…

  7. The Braves knew their rotation was coming off of injuries and the DL. Liberty Media has spent to the tune of a top 5 payroll in baseball. I find it hard to believe that Alex Anthopoulos did not want to add a starting pitcher. What I do believe is that everyone knew the TV money was going to be funky this season, so Liberty Media did not allow AA and the organization to buy a starter. Based upon the first couple of weeks of spring training, 2026 is shaping up to be a lot like 2025. You can blame AA for allowing Freddie Freeman and Dansby Swanson to walk away.

As for the Falcons and Hawks, it comes down to poor owners and bad decisions.

  8. Loser ass teams for a loser ass city full of loser ass fans. SAD

The Cobb County Barves suck because they ran off Kelly Krull.

I didn’t know they desanctified holy ground for the Benz – probably not wise.

  9. The Braves have been waylaid primarily by injuries. Liberty actually has allowed the team a big payroll – not a Dodgers, Yankees or Mets payroll but still one of the top five in MLB. (And they suddenly have $15m they can spend …) So, especially considering their record over the past 35 years and the fact there’s a lot of talent on the current roster, I’m not writing them off as a franchise yet.

The Falcons are pathetic – literally one of the very worst NFL franchises, both all time and often each season, from day one.

The rest? Meh. I don’t pay attention.

  10. Don’t leave out Atlanta United’s slide into mediocrity after winning the MLS Cup in 2018. They are hard to even watch at this point and are almost giving tickets away to get people to come to games.

  11. Pro sports are over-rated, over hyped and over priced..by a HEAP.
In the summer…take your kids fishing. Or camping..or both.
In the fall, watch College Football (for now) when you’re not deer hunting or hiking the Appalachian Trail or doing something else in the great outdoors.
In the winter..use the $$$ you would normally waste driving through horrible traffic, paying out the wazoo to park, watch a game and eat a hot dog etc…then leaving disappointed or pissed off at the team the traffic and the a’hole Red Sox fan you had a run in with…use that $$$ to take your family snow skiing or something.
    Fridays are for HS sports.
    Saturdays are for College sports.
Sundays are for church and family.
All of these things are more important than the rip-off of pro-sports.

    • Going to live pro sports events has become a VERY rich man’s playground. Baseball used to be affordable but now even that is ridiculously overpriced. I watch my Texas Rangers on TV during the season but can’t justify the obscene cost to go to the games any longer. I haven’t been to a Cowboys, Stars, or Mavericks game in a couple of decades (nor do I care to). As you said for now college football tops the charts. If I want baseball, I have several minor league teams to choose from and have just as good of a time for a fraction of the cost (or many college baseball games).

  12. Didn’t, don’t and will never ever give a shit about anything that calls that cesspool home! Ain’t part of my state at all! tech still SUX!!!

  13. The Falcons suck with no talent. The Cowboys suck with tremendous talent. Not sure which is more frustrating to endure. It’s bad ownership making terrible decisions on GMs, managers and players.

  14. I remember the Sports Illustrated article on the miserable state of Atlanta sports in the 70’s titled “ Loserville”. Here we are some 50 years later and nothing has changed except the cost to go see Atlanta pro teams still be a joke! ( nobody pays to see tech and nobody cares) I refuse to watch the Braves or MLB anymore since the stupid rules added especially the free runner in extra innings! I can’t watch pro basketball because all I do is yell “he double dribbled! He palmed the ball!FOR GODS SAKE HE TOOK 8 STEPS FOR A LAYUP!” Etc. falcons well….. I grew up a Dolphins fan because of Jake and Bill. Sigh….I miss Sports Illustrated.

  15. The Falcons suck like a septic tank truck. Even their greatest near achievement is owning the worse Super Bowl collapse in league history sucks.

The Braves have proven it’s possible to win championships in Atlanta. There was a time I attended a few dozen games a year. The all in price cost of seeing a single Braves game today versus the Fulton County stadium days is almost funny it’s so expensive. Some day the Hartman fund ticket renewal slogan might be “ compared to Braves tickets it’s a great bargain “

For the Hawks to be so bad for so long in Atlanta is an elite level accomplishment in suckitude.

I did attend a single Atlanta United game. It is a made to be seen in person sport. Maybe some day I’ll again accept the free ticket offer that got me there last time.

GT is dependably bad at most sports. I’ll always have their failures to
enjoy. They are proof Atlanta sports can be entertaining and affordable fun.

  16. speaking of losers, maybe sherman can come back and burn down the sports facilities in atlanta metro area and we can start again.
