It’s Christmas in March: Dawgs Down Bama

God bless you, Mike White.

While Kirby remains Portal avoidant, Mike White has utilized the Portal and NIL wisely. With one game remaining on the road in Starkvegas, Georgia has a chance to finish the season above .500 in conference play for the first time in a decade, since Mark Fox’s 2015-2016 campaign. Mind you, back then, the conference was perceptually worse, with only the Top 2 teams in the conference, Number 10 Kentucky and Number 15 Texas A&M being ranked. Georgia didn’t even get an NCAA tournament bid in 2016, either.

This is a different SEC Basketball conference nowadays, and Alabama came to Stegeman ranked 16th in the nation and on the heels of an eight game win streak. Kanon Catchings went off with 32 points followed by Blue Cain’s respectable 16 points.

Since many of you, like me, are avoidant of watching, here’s a YouTube of game highlights.

Let’s face it, watching Georgia beat Alabama in anything nowadays is cathartic.

Go Dawgs!

  1. I actually watched the whole game last night against my better judgement. I started late so I could fast forward through the commercials and halftime. Catchings was on fire.

Bama is good, but they are so reliant on the 3 point shot. They have great ball movement to set up up open threes for several guys who have range. I would not pick them to go far in the tournament though because of they have an off night shooting they are done. Their recent trend of betting down by double digits caught up with them against a Georgia team that had Catchings on a heater.

(Smurf and Wilkinson still make bad decisions that make me nervous)

    • I don’t usually watch either, but my wife had it on when I came inside. Best game I’ve seen them play in years.

    • Smurf and Wilkinson make so many decisions that some are bound to be bad. I ain’t worried about that.

  2. Amen, jp, beating Bama twice in a row in the 2 most high profile men’s sports makes me ecstatic!

  3. I haven’t watched a lot of Georgia basketball, but the games that I’ve watched them play with a lead, the tended to shrink in the final minutes. I don’t see that last night. The Dawgs went fast when they needed to and slowed it down at other times. Seems like we shot the ball really well in crunch time, too. We’ll need to keep that up if we’re going to make a run in the SEC tournament and win a game or two in bracket play. Fun to watch either way!

    • Should the sec tourny seedings stay in the current form, UGA basketball will play and have to win wednesday to play vs an a&m team that has handled UGA thursday night, then win 3 more competitive games to claim the sec title, highly unlikely, but still, a verrry solid/entertaining/record setting season…GO DAWGS!!

      • Was talking with a lifetime season ticket holder today and he told me that if we can win in Starkville there was a good chance we’d be able to skip Wednesday play. I have no idea, but I sure hope he is right.

  4. Gator fans say he’ll get you to the tournament, but that’s it. Well, jokes on them. Getting to the tournament is success in Athens! I keed.

Best UGA team in recent history. Competitive against any team other than Florida. Real potential for a tourney run for once. I likey.

    • Gator basketball fans have a 2025 national championship trophy to look at as well as a brand new 2026 SEC regular season championship trophy. The joke is Mike White left Gainesville and then trophies started showing up.

    • I don’t think that’s a joke. We could probably only hire a guy good enough to undo Crean’s mess and get us to respectable. Puts us in a position to grab a top up and coming HC in the future if Josh is so inclined to be still looking and improving the program. My guess is White is still looking too so we better be ready to get the right guy. If both parties think White is becoming a DGD we’re in trouble.

  5. The stretch in the 2nd half (after the clock malfunction delay) where the teams traded 3s was some insane basketball.

  6. I watched, but they didn’t make it easy with a 7+ minute delay due to the clock malfunction. Plus they let bama back in striking distance with a few minutes to go. Luckily, bama guards felt the need to dribble too long and use up precious clock.

Our perimeter shooting is damn good. We nailed the 3’s that have been there all year. For me, it’s infuriating to watch our guards dribble in the lane and force an awkward shot. During a replay even the announcer was saying “this is where he should’ve kicked it outside” (for the easy perimeter shot). White would be doing himself a huge favor if he could break the guards of that one bad habit.

  7. We’re making March matter … that’s good enough for me. If White leaves, I’ll say thank you for what he has done here. If Brooks decides eventually to make a move, he better find a guy who would be an upgrade.

As Kirby said the other night, Hogtown is a good basketball town, and I’m ok with that.

  8. That was a really nice win last night. I took my girlfriend to Athens for Saturday’s game in the Steg. First time for her; I haven’t been in awhile and found it to be a really fun experience. The Steg looks a lot better than it used to.

We also stopped in Bishop to see the Equestrian Event vs Auburn. Nice facility and friendly people. I’m gonna need to brush up on how the scoring works in that sport. We had no idea what we were watching for. But it was a fun and unique experience on an 80 degree sunny day.

  9. What is most encouraging for me is that this team has gotten better as the season has progressed. It hasn’t always been steady progress – sometimes a step back, but later two steps forward. That’s a good sign for the post season.

  10. Never watch. It’s only check score along! Go Dawgs. Don’t care if is tittlewinks. Leave that to the old timers!!
