This was an interesting nugget that came from interviews at the front end of this week’s draft:
So who was running the show against Alabama in the first half of the first game, as well as during the majority of the first matchup against Ole Miss? And if Allen is gone next year, will Schumann make the calls or is someone else “running the show”?
Is this same philosophy adopted on the offensive side of the ball?
Penny for your thoughts.
Who made the 3rd down call in New Orleans to give Ole Miss a chance to flip the field and kick the game winning FG? Inquiring minds want to know.
I thought this was pretty standard for the middle linebackers in most defenses. One is usually the captain and makes the on-field calls as the offensive formation lines up and shifts. It’s why they are so important and a killer if they go down in a game.
Same as a QB on offense. The coaches spend the week repping what to do based on the other teams look and personnel. FS and centers usually make calls as well.
Aren’t they wired-up now? I think this needs context. There is no question Bobo (and I assume Schumann) are calling in a play/formation over the headsets. Then Gunner and Allen are responsible for reading the opposing formations and making adjustments while the OL center and Allen with the DL also make blocking / gap assignments. On defense this may explain our ability to make significant adjustments at halftime as the staff can get Allen a clearer picture of what needs to be done.
On offense they just confirm that the 11th or 12th screen pass to Branch is going to bust open from opponent’s exhaustion.

There’s a reason that defenses and offenses shift at the last possible instant before the snap.
It’s to defeat the pre-game arrangements that “when they line up like that, we’ll do this”.
There’s not time for the coaches to process the situation and relay it to the on-field Captain before the ball is snapped.
Nothing new about check-offs and audibles .
They’re not fool-proof but they’re necessary.
The reasons why the 2 most valuable players on the field are DT and QB are –
DT- no adjustments can be made for a physical dominant force (Jalen Carter)
QB – he gets to make the last adjustment
