Duke, We’re Sorry

To avoid what happened this year, all conference champs, regardless of final ranking, get the autobid and bye. Oh, and they’re keeping it at 12 teams…at least this week.

Serious question, though, if your conference and your team (looking at you Notre Lame) are that competitive, why do you need amendments and special rules to ensure your seat at the table? Sounds like someone is making sure the weird quiet relative feels included at the Thanksgiving dinner table. To make matters worse, look at the Irish’s schedule:

Hopefully the Irish won’t opt out if they aren’t given a special exemption to get a bye, too.

Also, this:

This will end well. The days of Alabama carrying the conference is long gone, so it’s up to Kirby Smart to save the SEC drought…or at least that’s what the fresh prognostications are saying right now.

  1. Nine games can get undone just like it got done. Refuse to play a ninth game. What can anybody do about it?

    • Do you want the Auburn game played every year? 9 games is the only way that happens.

Here are the games that don’t happen annually with 8 (with their audience):

      Hamburgers/8&4 – 13.0 million (3rd highest of entire season behind OSU/Michigan & OSU/Texas)
      Vowels/Bammers – 8.0m (2nd of weekend behind UGA/Miss)
      Dawgs/Barn – 6.7m (3rd of weekend behind 2 other SEC games)
      Corn Dogs/Black Bear Rebels – 6.7m (3rd of weekend behind UGA/Bama & PSU/Oregon)
      Rebels/OU – 6.5m (3rd of weekend behind 2 other SEC games)
      Arky/Hamburgers – 5.6m (highest of weekend)
      MizWho/OU – 5.4m (3rd behind Ark/Tx and Oregon/USC)
      AgCult/MizWho – 4.8m (4th of weekend)

Also, Disney gets games like Alabama/Georgia, Bama/Texas, OU/Tenn, etc. more frequently.

ESPN paid for that inventory, and unless everyone is willing to give the extra money back, these games are happening.

    • You know southern football was screwed when the sec hired an individual born in auburn,ny….he’s a Fucking cesspool lovin’ carpetbagger, implant, ny educated on how to Fuck things up, will bet you he’s never eaten any proper grits, hell, he even resides in the armpit of the world….shiiit, Fuckin’ 9 Fuckin’ conference games….1st class blood sucking, ass wipe right there now…

    • Complete empty suit… Just observing the way he acts and talks, you can see he “rose” to the top of the league office by being the ultimate bureaucratic warrior….

  2. Shouldn’t the title of the post be, “Sorry, JMU?” Duke would have been in the playoff since they won the ACC, as would Bama, Miami and now Notre Dame, as at-large teams.

  3. Interesting storytelling in today’s WSJ regarding SEC versus b10 tv ratings. The SEC viewers are up 46% to an average 4.6 million per game versus b10. They’re up 11% at only 2.5 million viewers per game average.

Currently the b10 has a larger tv contract. That’s expected to flip at the next contract. Sankey wants a 16 team playoff keeping the conference championship game which is a tv goldmine. The b10 wants a 24 team playoff with no conference championship game.

So it’s all about who gets the most money in the future. I’m shocked I thought it was to help the student athletes.

  4. I wouldn’t have a problem with the Notre Dame deal if the group of 6 and power 4 were held to the same standard. AQ without standards only causes problems.

  5. I thought ND’s argument was their “traditional rivalry games,” Navy and Southern Cal. Didn’t see the Trojans on the 2026 schedule, on the Midshipmen. In fact, I didn’t see any traditional rivals except Navy.
