I see in the comments from time to time that some of yall are big Georgia high school football fans. So I’ll throw this out for debate:
Following Buford’s victory over Carrollton, they’re proclaiming Buford to be a National HS Champion, though the debate in socials is raging that it should be Thomas County Central.
Do you have dog in this fight? Who should it be…or, which high school program do you still follow that means a lot to you?
I would give the nod to Buford over TCC mainly because there were so many D1 kids all over the field for both Buford and Carrollton. The LOS looked closer to a college game to me than the TCC game did and the TCC win seemed more about one standout player for the Yellow Jackets at RB. That kid was unstoppable.
The 6A game was more evenly matched and could have gone either way and had standout prospects on both sides of the ball. Too bad they can’t meet up somewhere and play it out on the field.
How in the hell is that RB only going to Wake Forest?
North Gwinnett grad here…the answer is always “not Buford.” I really wish Carrollton had cashed in early on rather than continuing to give Buford the ball when they were driving. They could have put Buford in a big hole but let them stay in the game and then the defense gave out of gas.
Re: TCC…I was telling my kids about those early-mid 90s teams this week. Seeing that sign just hammers home how dominant they were back then. I saw TCC play a whole lot of semifinal games in the Georgia Dome when I was a kid.
Same here.
I was pulling for Carrollton, as well. If they would have won the game they would have been my answer over TCC also.
I watche TCC dismantle Dalton two years in a row in the semi’s. Funny thing about those teams is that everyone on the team was like a cookie cutter repl;ica….all 6’2″ 220 and running a 4.4…guards, tackles, QB, WR’s…they were so flipping fast. Thos two Dalton teams were QB’d by Ladd McConeys dad, Benji and Benji may have been the best HS QB I have ever seen. He was a cool 6’4″ 190-200 and could run like a dang deer.
I will take any team from the old 912 area code, even the ones that use the enemy of the state as their mascot.
ApalachDawg,
Got to remember the mascot of Central’s intown rival.
Same thing with the old Waycross High School (BullDAWGS) and Ware County High School (ditch lizards).
The original high school was always the BullDAWGS. The “newer school” had to take the piss poor mascot so it could be considered a “rival.”
I was a senior at Waycross High when we won state in 1982 with Todd Williams at QB. With Ware County as our rivals, I’ve been hating Gators for a long time. Now my granddaughter and grandson are attending Ware County. Alas, they didn’t have a choice. 🙂
The defacto Natl Championship occurs Saturday, 3pm CST @ Jerry World. Duncanville (TX) v Galena Park North Shore (TX). Usual suspects, usual powerhouses.
Ok. Texas has about 3% of HS football players listed as being recruited by DIV I schools. . Georgia has almost 9%. Florida has about 10%. Texas has some players to be sure and a lot of them, but the density of CFB recruits is far greater in Georgia, Florida, Louisiana and Alabama.
A televised 128 team 35 week season national championship with portal and nil seems to be a much needed solution. Skip the education part. It’s for the children.
Side rant…who the hell thinks a Yellowjacket is some type of meaningful mascot? Saw a HS driving through middle Texas with that mascot on their sign and nearly wrecked my car from the revulsion.
This^.
“It’s for the children.”
Booster Parents: “What are y’all thinking replacing a 75 year old elementary school when Buford just built a new stadium!!! We want a new stadium toooo!!!”
What I watched was the four Georgia signees, That Helton kid for Carrollton and that green kid for Buford will be in Sanford on he field soon,
Dayum. TCC took Gainesville to the woodshed!
Pretty sure that Buford or Carrollton would have a shot to win the ACC.
A Thomasville Dawg here, and I attended the TCC game on Wednesday. Those seniors lost a total of 4 games in 4 years. 23 and 25 teams were 15-0 and no one came within 21 points of them this year. They are dominant and there is a culture there. Those boys love one another. I like their chances against a team full of paid recruits. Our boys have a family bond and many years of playing together.
But who won the Milk Bowl?
We did back in the dark ages – Dykes H.S. Our QB was Billy Payne Dooly made him a DE
Generally south Georgia HS teams are better than Atlanta area HS teams. So I’d give the not to Thomas County Central.
Used to be that way but, unfortunately, with all the transfers and money flying around the greater Atlanta area, south GA teams have been getting left behind. Out of 8 state title games this season, 2 winners were from south Georgia. The only 2 south GA teams that made the title games.
Yeah the team stats are really good.

oops
I’m not putting our small school into the discussion with these teams but, how bout them Worth County Rams? Almost 40 years after our last state title, we finally get another one with a game-sealing interception at the end. Story sounds familiar but, I can’t quite put my finger on it. 😉
