Not going to lie, the guy at the right could’ve easily been me. That’s peak 1990’s campus style. I’d also pay good money to have that hat.
I recall watching Pulp Fiction at Alps Cinema and again here at Tate. Also spending hours playing pool, arcade games, grabbing food. Watched the OJ Verdict come through while sitting in one of the chairs adjacent to the parking lot. Did I study there. That’d be a no, but I did send my first email from the computer lab there on the second floor.
Ah, the good ole days.
So many memories…
Lol, when I told some student workers about the time they showed Cafe Flesh at the Tate Theater – soooo much of a generational discrepancy.
Oh man. Not a lot of time at the movies, but definitely during the day killing time between classes. Shooting pool, friends in the cafe (we lived off those grilled cheese sandwiches), sportcenter in front of that old box tv. I might’ve even stuck around for some Days of our Lives when I figured out that’s when the girls showed up. Lol.
To paraphrase Mulaney … “this is a very old-fashioned photo” … while I appreciate the locale and clothing, the thing that most notice – it appears that only a single person in this photo is using a phone and she appears to be talking on it with the phone to her ear. Reproduce this photo today in the Tate Center and most of the folks will be zombie staring at a smartphone screen looking at the snaps or the tik toks. 😉
On a side note, I don’t remember hitting up the Tate Center frequently for movies when I was in school. We went to movies (I first saw Broadcast News at the Georgia Theatre) but I remember going Downtown and out to the Mall.
Never went to the Tate theater, but I did see Raising Arizona and Dazed and Confused for the first time at the Georgia Theatre…man, that was fun watching those in a packed house.
You know how the opening credits for Raising Arizona start about 10 minutes into the movie? I had just bought one of those big 32-ounce Ga Theater beers when the entire place went “WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE” singing along. Like Andy Griffith in “What it Was, Was Football”…I got startled and dropped my big orange, I mean big beer.
That had to be before you could take “…ary mouthful” of those two hotdogs you got!
Who use to go to see the midnight movie at PJ (Psycology/Journalism) amphitheater which always was the Rocky Horror Picture Show?
There was no Tate center when I attended late 70’s. All the movies were in South PJ and student center was in Memorial Hall. Downtown was nothing like it is today. My Daughter got to enjoy all the upgrades when she attended 2010-14. I do miss Steverinos, Poss BBQ and Cleves Place.
Steverinos. God bless America.
Swamp Guinea
The pool room was where I spent most of my Tate time. I remember Alphonso Ellis playing in there a lot.
I used to go as a kid to the arcade. Street Fighter 2, X-Men, NBA Jam and Wrestlefest were my faves. I remember watching the 92 Cocktail party game on the TV on the opposite end past the bathrooms.
Went to a few movies there but best memory was seeing the Red Hot Chili Peppers downstairs in 1985 I believe.
