2nd, and ‘26…Bobo is Here a While Folks

Well, let’s allow this to be your Friday Fodder for Filibustering, shall we?

Marc Weiszer of the Athens Banner-Herald reported on Thursday that offensive coordinator Mike Bobo signed a one-year contract extension before the 2024 season that will now keep him in the role through the 2026 season.

The deal, which was not previously reported, came to light following an open records request by the Banner-Herald. Bobo’s $1.403 million salary will increase to $1.503 million on July 1, 2025 and then to $1.603 million on July 1, 2026.

Let’s hear it. This might be more volatile than the Playpen…so behave, scamps.

  1. I sure hope Kirby knows what he’s doing with regards to the offense, because if it doesn’t improve this year, he’s gonna burn up a heap of goodwill. If Bobo can reel in QB Jared Curtis in this ’26 recruiting class, who’s been compared to Matthew Stafford, that would go a LONG way towards improving our offense. But… that’s a ways down the line if it happens, and Dan Lanning is gonna pull every string he has to get him to Oregon. Regarding this coming season, replacing what we lost on the OL and our starting QB ain’t gonna be a piece of cake. You can expect growing pains.
Hope these WR’s coming in can help right the ship, but whoever the QB is can expect to be blitzed early and often. That’s why it’s critical that we get back to running the damn ball consistently. Keeping the RB’s out of the trainer’s room is the key.

  2. Man, that photo brings back some fun memories from UGA. Good times with the Zetas were easy to find….what was the question again? Oh, right! Mike Bobo’s new contract after a very good 2023 season. Makes sense to me, no argument here. In fact, didn’t his Auburn buyout finally end after the 2023 season as well, so doing a new deal was required? Seems like nothing to see here. That said, if Searels can’t figure out the OL and the new WRs aren’t stars, we’ve already seen the Georgia offense’s ceiling for 2025. That puts pressure on the defense to be better than last year, but they’ve got the talent and coaching to achieve that goal.

Coaching changes aren’t happening this year, so we’ve got to move forward and hope Kirby’s right to give a couple of these guys another shot.

    • That pic made me break out my old formal/social photos from the 80s. And now I’m chuckling to myself thinking of sorority nicknames back then (many bestowed by other sororities). In no particular order:

Zeta – zits, tits and armpits
      Tri Delt – triple nipple
Phi Mu – rattle, tattle, tattle, here comes the cattle: Phiii Moooo
      Kappa – kappa kappa gramma
Gamma Phi Beta – jamma vibrator
      AOPi – AO hairpie
      AGD – always going down
      DG – dick grabbers
      DPhiE – diesel dyfe
      Sigma Kappa – snakey K

Chi O and ADPi somehow escaped epithets. But at least by our standards at the time, they were the marrying kind.

As far as my fraternity was concerned, we were just called assholes.

  3. After winning 2 nattys I thought the Kirby/Monken duo would re-write the record books a la Saban. With moves like this I’m worried that Kirby’s best days might already be behind him.

Monken had what it took to win it all, and his strengths matched up well with Kirby’s approach. I don’t see that quality in CMB.

    • Do you think Kirby tried to convince Monken to stay or was he so loyal to his friend that he decided to tell Monken leaving was fine with him?

      • Monken openly stated his reasons for leaving. He wants to be an nfl HC. Like everyone who loves the Dawgs, I doubt Kirby was happy to see him go.

  4. This kind of makes me laugh. So many people are tearing their hair that I can’t help but laugh.

  5. FWIW, the guy who posts all the clips of the old games on twitter posted one of the 2012 Missouri game yesterday, I took the bait to watch the Jarvis Jones highlights, but one of the highlights included was Keith Marshall converting a 3rd and 7 with a delayed draw – sorry haters!

  6. My only thoughts are that I had the same shirt Bobo is wearing and the same hat Kirby is wearing. Some how I was not hanging with Zetas in 1997. Good to know it wasnt because of my clothing.

    • Thought the same thing, except my hat was white. And I may still have the shirt – must’ve shrunk in the dryer. And it was ’92.

  7. Let’s do some game theory – maybe it was really Kirby who got in the fight at Allan’s (isn’t that where it was?), and Mike took the fall for him, and that’s why Kirby is so loyal to him???

    • As someone who frequented some of the same, um, fine dining establishments as Bobo back in the day, I’d say that wouldn’t be the first time he was involved in a bit of a misunderstanding. My perspective of him was he was a little unhinged, but most everybody was at one in the morning. You can be even more unhinged when you’re accompanied by giant human beings that are on your side, too.

  8. Beat The turds in 97 as QB1 after some of the worst defeats in history… now you are vilified…after winning a SEC championship…i have been known to scream at Bobo on one of those infamous 2and long draws up the middle with the smallest RB we have and/or carolina game malpractice but damn just hard to watch doing this shit to one of our own.
as time has passed i am glad he told D. Watson he would be a great TE/WR as that dude is toxic and i am glad Watson is not a part of Bulldog history.

  9. Offensively, I worry most about the QB situation. Kirby’s been said (in comments on this site) to be “too loyal” to Bobo and that’s why he’s still on staff. Is that true? Maybe. What about the QB? Is Bobo going to be “too loyal” to Gunner Stockton to really have an open QB competition in the spring? Everyone on this site knows that Bobo’s known Stockton and his family for a long time. Will Ryan Puglisi get a fair chance to win the job in the spring? I don’t know. The portal will be open once again in April and anyone (especially QBs) not happy with not playing know how to use it. Just thinking out loud…

  10. SEC Champions. Beat Texas twice. Bama comeback spoiled by a terrible defensive play. Went to Sugar Bowl and lost to a TE playing QB that took his team to the championship game while we play our backup QB. Someone…anyone…show me how last season’s “failure” is on Bobo. One play away from 4 team playoff and SEC title the year before. Hurl all the invective you want at Bobo, but it’s Kirby’s Defense that has badly regressed from an impossible standard set by the ‘21 & ‘22 teams.

    • Just gonna put this here. I think continuity is important, and I’ll defer to Kirby most of the time. But, if shit like this doesn’t improve, the criticism of Bobo and Kirby will be warranted.

      UGA 2024 1st half points:
      6- Clemson
      3- UK
      7- Alabama
      6- UF
      7- Ole Piss
      0- GT
      3- Texas
      3- ND

35 first half points in 8 games. Not ideal.

  11. Bobo is predictable and there’s a reason no other school wants him. Everyone else on our staff we have to fight and keep every year, except for Bobo. I agree with the comment above about Bobo might be too loyal to Gunner. We need a real competition at QB, because a slow mobile QB ain’t going to cut it.

  12. I love all these people that have never been to a practice, sat in on a coach meeting, etc. but sit on their couch every Saturday and actually think they know more than Kirby Smart. Geez people, get another hobby or go pull for Auburn. How big of a dumbass can you really be?

  13. I’m disappointed. I feel like we could pay a guy in the booth to spin a wheel with plays listed on them and do about as well as Bobo. At least it would be less predictable. I guess we have another year of “wtf was he thinking?” to look forward to. I hope I am wrong, but I think our offense is gonna really suck this year.

  14. How many times did Bobo call the perfect play only to have the receiver DROP the ball?

  15. Something was off last year. Could be team chemistry lacking, could be NIL jealousy, could be portal players not caring about anything but an NFL spotlight on them or something else entirely. From some of the things that players have said, it sounded like the players were not unified in the locker room. We’ll never know for sure, but always coming out and sleepwalking through the first 2 quarters just indicates that players were not ready or motivated to play, so most people throw that on the coaches whether it’s true or not. It was what it was and now we’re moving on to 2025, hoping for a better end result. SEC Champions? Funny how that “just means less” nowadays with the watered down, expanded playoffs.

  16. FYI…contracts don’t mean anything if you truly want to fire someone (and as long as the buyout isn’t too high).
