Huddle Up 2/25/2024

Here’s some Sunday Nostalgia to start your day:

In UGA spring sports news, the Diamond Dawgs won on a 9th inning rally featuring a 3-run homer by Kolby Branch and a walkoff HR by Dillon Carter. They’re now 6-0 and playing for the sweep of Northern Kentucky today.

In softball, the Lady Dawgs are hosting the Georgia Classic and treated their guests rudely today, beating VA Tech 7-5 and Radford 10-1. They’re now 11-1 and ranked #3 in the nation. They square off with Dartmouth today.

Manny Diaz has announced that this, his 36th season, will be his final season as tennis coach.

Sophomore Christopher Morales Williams set the world indoor record in the 400-meter dash, with a time of 44.49, to win Georgia’s fifth men’s title in the event at the Southeastern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships Saturday. He surpasses former USC sprinter Michael Norman’s world indoor record of 44.52 from 2018. Yeah, but, can he catch a football?

I still have nothing to say about basketball.

Anyone still watching NASCAR? If so, here’s your new favorite driver:

Go Dawgs!

  1. “I still have nothing to say about basketball” is a statement that has been painfully true about our program since I was junior on campus and Tubby Smith was our coach. There was some hope during the Fox years, but what a drought.

  2. Softball dawgs getting it done. Started watching a few years ago. Fun game in my opinion. Go Dawgs!

    • I have never been to a game in person, but I like the TV product a lot. They play hard and I don’t know what it is – maybe the field is smaller? – but it is more entertaining to watch than baseball for me.

      • I’m not totally sure either. Really started watching when I had a younger cousin playing, so there’s that. Game moves fast, they play with joy and enthusiasm.

  3. Came in as freshman 1980. I remember standing in that student section my first three years. No sitting.
    Salad days.
    It was electric. Good times.

  4. Austin Hill won the Xfinity race yesterday afternoon at AMS. Of course I root for our fellow Dawg, Chase Elliott in the cup series. He really hooked me when he quoted Kirby Smart talking about “pressure is a privilege”. I scored some some sweet suite tix to the Atlanta Motor Speedway this afternoon. Y’all root for the #9 Hooters Chevrolet with me today and GO DAWGS!

  5. I have an LP record, all white with the Bulldog logo in the middle, with all of the great Dawg songs of that era. One of these days I need to buy a record player and dust that thing off.

  6. Whatever we as a community do to keep the legacy of GTP going, I think we should recognize Michael/SB as Lead Content Creator in Perpetuity sort of like Augusta National recognizes Bobby Jones as President in Perpetuity.

    • “Spiritual Leader and Big Dawg Emeritus, in perpetuity”

He’d probably roll his eyes at the unusual display of sentimentality, but this is an excellent idea. Whatever follows won’t be exactly the way he did it. How could it be? But it can follow the broad principles he seemed to use: humor, music, a distinct disdain for our rivals, and a general avoidance of politics and religion. If you disagree, try not to be disagreeable about it. Don’t drag our own players and staff (except for Greg McGarity or Mike Adams. FTMF)

I like to think that he would be pleased to know that the online community he constructed over the years meant enough to the inmates that we wanted it to carry on in some recognizable fashion. Of course, it could all turn into Yugoslavia after Tito. But it’s worth a shot!

    • Definitely think there should be some sort of “in memorium” link at the top of the page. I think Seth’s closing paragraph about the Senator in his Athletic piece, along with a link to GTP’s first post, would be good starts, but definitely a ton of options.

      • We’ll help Otis with this once we know what’s happening with the actual GTP site.

    • As our beloved Bluto stated “Dooleys Junk Yard Dawgs”, is the greatest college football song evah….take the delightful GTP photo of the Godfather of Soul with Coach Dooley and super impose the Senator (Bluto in 70’s style) in between the two or off to the side… GO DAWGS!!

  7. 1980 was gold! I got to UGA in 1979 (favorite Dawg memory from that year was beating LSU and Charles Alexander (the great). Sat in the stands for an hour or more after the game celebrating.

Of course, 1980 was like that for every game. Great memories.
