Beck probably hasn’t been enjoying the social media fallout from his smile on the sideline. The optics of a leader grinning while his team is getting their asses handed to them looks bad, but some explanation from friends and family likely cleared some of that, maybe a little. Here’s Beck’s mom to explain:

So what could look worse than a smile? Jake Pope says hold my beer…
Maybe this is why Pope hasn’t been seeing the field this year. Something tells me he’s guaranteed not to see it, or maybe even the practice field in Athens, either.
+++++
Update: Jake Pope issues an explanation, Kirby describes it as “just stupid”.
That practice I saw back in the summer was pretty rough on Mr. Pope…. Not shocked he has been down in the depth chart. But he is on the travel squad so that’s something.
Not very often that I would endorse anything this guy had to say but, he ain’t wrong:

Cut his ass today.
Pope seems like he may need to drop down a level or two. Maybe the prospect of playing will make him take it more seriously.
I saw that entire Beck smile scenario when it happened on TV. Didn’t bother me at all since I saw it in context. I took it that his friend was trying to cheer him up.
The gameplan, playcalling, effort and sense of urgency were what pissed me off.
The OM player Pope was interacting with is one of his best friends from Buford HS along with that player’s mom. It’s a nothingburger.
He gone.
All this stuff just reminds me of how lucky I was to go to school with no cell phones, no digital cameras and no social media.
Thanks for posting this. This whole issue is a perfect microcosm of the world today. Everyone rushes to judgment about everything without the perspective necessary to form a reasonable opinion…
As for me, I’ve come around to the fact that I’m on team Carson Beck. He stuck around, paid his dues, and been a good great player for this team.
He hasn’t played his best this season, but he’s also taking a lot of undue criticism for stuff that’s beyond his control.
The Lamborghini made him a lightning rod IMO. But I think the results this past Saturday may have finally opened a few more folks eyes to the fact that this Georgia team’s problems extend far beyond number 15.
Ever and always, go Dawgs!
While I think this is a nothingburger, I think that Beck’s issue here is that there haven’t been many/any videos of him getting into the guys on the sidelines to fire them up when things are going off the rails. The last few games all that I’ve seen of him on the sidelines is looking shell-shocked, mopey, confused and now smiling. Not saying he doesn’t do the leadership thing, but to idiot fans such as Nil Butron (and f*** that guy anyways!), it doesn’t buy Beck a lot of leeway when there is a perceived lack of leadership throughout the whole team.
He showed fire on the sidelines during the comeback against Bama. Maybe some vs FL. TV doesn’t show much else but does catch him complaining about the dropped passes and missed routes or blocking assignments when he’s coming off the field. Kid has lost a ton of draft money for sure.
All of this is ridiculous. Our fan base is looking for any reason whatsoever to take shots at the team (coaches or players) after Saturday.
Good grief, people, a little context and grace.
Amen. We have a lot of shitty and entitled people in our fan base. There’s a history of this kind of stuff. Aaron Murray who fought his ass off for the University of Georgia had garbage thrown in his yard because he had a bad game. Jake Fromme’s parents finally had to stop coming to games in ‘19 because they got sick of hearing people yell awful stuff about him. Probably had something to do with him going pro early even though it made sense for him to come back. Stetson Bennett got treated like shit all the way to the ‘21 title. Then those fans praised him but didn’t want him back the next year. In ‘22 it was the same shit with people calling for Beck all the way through an undefeated season. Now they treat Beck like shit. We have some shitty people in our fan base and I bet some asshole will come out of the woodwork and defend all the stuff I mentioned .
Preach.
Word. It’s been a hideous 48 hours of optics and opinions out there in the socials. I spent a good bit of last night having to mark “not interested” on several things but stuff keeps flowing in. It’s almost like the 90s of Georgia football never existed.
I know it. Personally I think this makes the fans were talking about happy. They couldnt stand it in ‘21 and ‘22. They bitched and hollered and screamed and came up with “concerns” week after week. I said over at GTP on an almost daily basis that if they couldnt just enjoy it there was no hope for them. Now they’ve finally got a little of what they wanted. Stuff to freak out about, misdiagnose, and worry over. They aren’t happy unless they’re miserable. That dumbass Corch Irvin Meyers said at one point last season, “Concerns abound!” A season that saw the Dawgs lose one game and he was screaming about all the concerns. These people love shit like Saturday because it gives them a chance to be right.
^^^^
Man, I was shaking my head as I read the history lesson of how awful portions of the Georgia fan base have been to our quarterbacks over the years.
The Aaron Murray thing still pisses me off. That kid laid it all on the line for this University. Fromm too.
Serious question… Who was the last Georgia quarterback that a portion of the fan base didn’t crap all over?
Stafford?
Stanford didn’t get it as bad. Maybe David Greene.
JT Daniels and DJ Shockley, maybe, mostly due to a small body of work with decent results?
Yep. Shock got a little of it though. A percentage of the fan base never embraced him because they got pissy about him and Greene sharing playing time. JT played just enough and was suddenly gone for all those people to not get familiar enough with him to do their thing.
Beck’s I can understand, Pope, oh hell no! Congratulate your old team buddy with a hug, handshake and whatever, but to Frigging jump up and down like that after your team just got a big arsse kicking. NO SIR.
That’s why Kirby said it was stupid.
Our society has reached new highs in that we need smile police.
