Warding Off the Opt Out Narrative

In case you missed it, Cam Ward broke the ACC passing TD record in the first half of the Pop Tarts Bowl, then decides to dip at halftime and sit out the rest of the game. Miami lost by 1 point, and Ward didn’t re-enter the game with 56 seconds remaining to lead a comeback. Give him credit, he at least played.

Danny boy, you’re a confusing man.

For what it’s worth, the ACC has won one bowl game so far. Let’s focus less on SEC bias, though.

  1. I understand Malik Nabors did the same thing in Tampa after breaking the LSU receiving yards record. I’m guessing based on what I saw on the sidelines, Cristobal appeared to be in on the plan, so it’s hard to get on Ward about it even when the game turned.

If I were a Canes fan (thank goodness I’m not), I would be livid about the decision not to return to a game that was winnable. I wonder if John Ruiz was briefed in on the plan.

I’m glad Kirby stamped this attitude out of his program after the Texas 2018/19 debacle in New Orleans. If you don’t plan to play because you’re going to the draft or to the portal, you don’t come on the trip.

    • After several attempts of defining “doing the same thing over and over, hoping for a different result”, “madness”, “irrationality”, “severely disordered”, “utterly foolish”, topped the list, “insanities of modern life” was a good read, “disease of the dollar” is a plot to undercut the newest argument for insanity, with which this legalese followed, “mental capacity required by law”…Just “show me the money” and we are all fucking insane, nil in different states, enact different result$, when it gits to the point of, “when the inmates run the asylum” and are scripting player management/team goals, all is not lost, just the moral authority has been devalued…The immortal Hank Williams said it best “If you’ve got the money, honey, I’ve got the time”….GO DAWGS!!

  2. Miami didn’t care about winning, which is a shame. Why even play the game? Just my opinion, but I don’t care for opt outs.

  3. I would think that NIL would have strings attached in a semi-contractual manner that would reduce opt outs and “enforce” participation. Are these dudes getting paid to not play by their co-ops?

    • One of the few rules on NIL has is that the NIL payment may not be conditioned on playing. If it is, it is forbidden “pay to pay.” Yes, I am serious.

  4. “Give him credit, he at least played.” ?
Well if playing to set a personal (ME) record is playing, I guess maybe. It would have been more honest to just sit it out. Or I guess he could play and once he set the record he could flop on the next play and have the medical team walk him off and make it look like he was mildly injured. Come on, guys, if it’s all supposed to be theatrical, use a little imagination. Besides, is a passing record in the ACC really a record worth having?

    • I understand and respect your point of view. May I offer another perspective for your consideration? He played 1 half and turned over to his inexperienced backup a lead his team only had to hold a lead for 30 minutes. If he ” just sat out” he would have turned over a zero point lead and required his inexperienced backup and the defense 60 minutes to have to outcome ISU. His teammates may not have ever taken a lead over 60 minutes.

If I was a Hurricane fan or player I would select the option of him getting us a lead going into the second quarter.

      • I don’t think Kirby would ever go along with something like this. I’m guessing his opinion is if you come to the game, you play as long as and when I need you. Otherwise, thanks for being part of the team.

  5. It’s Miami The U here it’s always Big Me first my little team mates second. There is and long has been a rot inside the team culture. Hiring coaches that embrace it won’t change it. It starts at the top of the money chain booster who loves that lifestyle. Complete polar opposite of Athens Georgia.

  6. I’m sorry but opt outs show a person character. Responsibility to your teammates as well as yourself is gone from culture. What the hell is the world coming too?

    • Such an under rated belief in this culture. Doing something because your friends and teammates are depending on you is no longer in vogue. Can’t imagine being this way if I had been graced with ability and health to reach this level. It just feels like a weakness of character.

  7. Gawd those announcers were hard to listen to during the broadcast of that game. And constantly showing the Pop Tart characters was pretty damn annoying too. I still think the announcers (Jordan Rodgers) should STFU more often -AND- the network is required to show the cheerleaders between every play.

    • I’d love to avoid all of the unnecessary commentary and get rid of the announcers and only show the SkyCast view of the games. You get to actually hear the crowds, bands and the stadium announcer WITHOUT all of the annoying chatter of the network announcers who think that we need to listen to them on a 15-30 minute pregame show plus 15 more minutes of them talking prior to kick-off, all throughout the game and a post-game show.

      • Skycast times 10. You would think the suits wanting to keep costs down would wise up and quit paying six figures (or more or more) to these bozos. Put some of that money into cameras and production values.

  8. I can’t remember who it was last year for UGA who almost sounded insulted when asked if he was opting out. There were numerous guys who publicly stated that they were coming back because of wanting to finish what they started with their TEAM mates. They felt they had an obligation to each other. Sadly, very few teams have that. Way too much me, me, me.

  9. Wait…the idea of playoffs and a championship has eroded the value of the other bowl games? Didn’t see that coming. /s
