Unsweet Sixteen

Didn’t like the CFP expansion? Well, you’re not going to like this. What had been in the talks for a while since February seems to be coming closer to a reality.

Who is calling the shots here? Sounds like the B1G and the SEC are firming their stranglehold on the other conferences necks and purse strings.

Leaders in each conference have spent the last several weeks evolving a format idea — multiple automatic qualifiers per league — into a more realistic proposal. The 14- or 16-team model would grant four automatic qualifiers each to the SEC and Big Ten; two each to the ACC and Big 12; and one to the highest-ranked Group of Five champion. It includes one or three at-large spots, one of those intended for Notre Dame if it finishes ranked inside the top 14 — a guarantee specifically designated for the Irish that is part of the CFP memorandum.

Officials describe the 14-team format as a 4-4-2-2-1+1 model in which the top two seeds receive first-round byes. There would be no byes in a 16-team structure. In either, the CFP selection committee’s role is greatly diminished. The committee, its future — as the memorandum stipulates — also controlled by the SEC and Big Ten, would presumably seed 1 through 14 or 16 based directly on its top-25 rankings.

Naturally, the ACC and BIG XII aren’t thrilled at all. To make it even more interesting, imagine an SECCG weekend that has two other play-in games going on with the 3 and 6 and 4 and 5 place finishers in the SEC playing a +1 for the other two automatic bids. Are they extra home games, extra neutral games?

Who knows and who cares, I’m assuming, because the bottom line is it just means more money.

    • Oh, better yet, instead of one final game in march, let’s have a best of three championship event that extends the season into late april, (with one game played in Frankfurt), early may, then the 64th team, that was a lucky loser invitee gets to playoff against the 23rd ranked team for the third place constipation trophy…and that’s the bottom line, cause “Stone Cold says so”….

  1. I don’t think the powers that be can make the regular season as meaningless as it is in college basketball, but damn, they sure seem to be trying their best.

Why do the 3rd and 4th best teams in the Big 10 and SEC deserve a shot at the national title? Yes, I say that with the full understanding that the Suckeyes won the title last year from one of those spots.

  2. The committee’s role will be greatly diminished because the seeds will be based on their rankings.. Do I trust Disney not to influence the rankings? Not in a million years.

  3. We knew this was coming, but that does not make it any less awful. A few weeks ago someone on this very site posted words that fit my current stance on college football, “I still enjoy Saturdays, but I hate everything to do with the off season.” Or something close to it. Yep, this is me 100%.

  4. The lowest rating for CFB in a long time last season…..so what do we need to do? Add more #$%$#^$ SMH
