To whet your appetite:
Maybe they will be. Maybe they won’t. Between Clemson’s struggles against SEC and LSU’s inability to win an opener since the pre-COVID days, it’s a toss-up. I don’t hate Dinich, but I don’t care for her, much either. There are much worse, including Danny Kanell, Paul Finebaum, and, heck, even Mike Griffith can be downright awful.
But let’s face it, I think most of us around here try to tune some of this out and not pay attention to the off-season fodder (sorry if I bring you to that misery, but there’s not much else going on right now)…so let’s focus on what really can bring us to the nails on chalkboard moments.
The in-game commentary.
I couldn’t find any clips of horrible announcing, but I think we all have had moments of “please make these people shut up” while watching games. For some of you, it’s Gary Danielson. For others, Kirk Herbstreit and his blatant homerism.
Then there’s this:
What’s your feelings on the Howard/Zeier era of radio calls for the Bulldawgs? No doubt that no one will replace Munson…ever…but given the chance, would you do like the old days and turn the TV down and listen to the radio broadcast?
Discuss. How did you like the Georgia radio team…and who’s the worst commentary team in college football?
I still listen to our radio crew. I get more details on what’s going on with UGA during the game without all the ESPN fluff.
Agreed, also as mentioned below Bama’s new team isn’t great.
Howard isn’t Munson but he is better than most who are coming after him delivering the radio broadcast.
The homers on the Alabama radio network since Eli Gold’s forced retirement are awful.
Heather Dinich and what’s her name who picked TCU to beat us are awful.
I know people around here don’t like Scott Howard’s delivery style, but as Ray Goff said, it’s hard following a legend in Coach Dooley, but that was easier than being the person to replace Munson. I thought Zeier was outstanding when I could listen. I have no idea how Brock is going to do, but EZ could break down what’s going as well (or better than) either Herbstreit or Joel Klatt.
It took a while for Howard to grow on me, but only because he wasn’t Munson. It’s not fair to Scott, but growing up listening to Larry and replaying his famous (and even the not-so-famous) calls made it difficult to get used to the different style from Scott.
I think Scott Howard does a great job. I enjoyed Zeier’s color and learned a lot listening to his analysis. However, I have not turned down the tv broadcast to listen to them, although was tempted when Bizzarro Reba was on the call.
I wish Josh Brock the best and hope to get some good lineman analysis!
Kelly might make Clem’s Son look like a contender.
I looked up awful announcers in the dictionary and there was a picture of Beth Mowins.
and Rod Gilmore
and Gary Danielson
Gilmore is unbearable! He’s a highly educated man but tries way too hard to show it. It’s like he’s got a thesaurus shoved up his ass. He comes up with the most inane comments & loves to hear himself riff. I reckon I’m a glutton for punishment as I will sometime listen to him just to hear the foolish bullshit that comes out of his mouth!
yes, yes and yes….I think I dislike Gilmore’s announcing even more than Mowin’s.
I came here to say Beth fuckin’ Mowins. She sounds like a red bull addict that is constipated.
“…but given the chance, would you do like the old days and turn the TV down and listen to the radio broadcast?”
Neither. If I happen to be driving I will listen to the radio in the car, but that’s about it. Radio is as bad as TV or worse. It’s not Howard’s fault – it is the constant two second ads, e.g., ‘the Aflac game summary’, or ‘the Home Depot Bulldog moment’. I just want to know the score, but usually I get where I’m going before they say the score. The TV is always on MUTE unless something happens and I can’t tell what it was just by looking at the screen, but that has only happened a couple of times.
Curious as to what you are listening to when it’s on mute? Just the gathering going on at the watch party or what? Many times I’d love to listen to music instead of announcing but most of my crew would act like that was some kinda personal insult or something.
When it’s available I will watch a SkyCast with stadium (including bands) sound on. They are too few and far between. When they break for a commercial that gets muted although the wife sometimes wants to watch the ads. 🙁 My crew is usually just family and football games are rare occasions when I get to make the choice.
I’d pay extra for Skycast on any game I watch, including the Dawgs. The stadium announcer and crowd is all I need. I think they filter out the piped in music? I don’t remember being annoyed by it like I am in person.
I honestly don’t know why the TV folks don’t do more SkyCast games. I suppose it lends itself more to a domed stadium like the Benz, but I think it’s doable anywhere. I suppose it would cost more from a production standpoint, but I think that would be offset by paying two talking heads in the booth. Might even be cheaper.
I didn’t love Zeier, but, I also have certain feelings about Loran Smith. Scott Howard was essentially forced into an impossible situation, but he’s grown on me over the years. Time will tell with Josh Brock, but he does at least have some broadcasting experience. The first couple of years with Zeier were ROUGH.
What’s your feelings on the Howard/Zeier era of radio calls for the Bulldawgs?
I thought they were okay to listen to. Nothing legendary but Zeier’s insight into what was happening with regard to the play call and execution was helpful for me. Howard does a nice job except on a big play where he yells into the microphone.
I normally listen to the TV Broadcast announcers. Unless it’s Beth Mowins. Then I mute it and turn on music.
Beth Mowins sounds like she has a mouth full of raisins or something. Just horrible. And I don’t much like listening to a woman call a game anyway. Hiss if you want, I don’t care. It’s not a damn crime. But there are others I could listen to a lot easier than her. Shes just horrible. But I would rather listen to Beth Mowins every game of the season than listen to Joe Tessitore even once. I would rather listen to my dog having diarrhea than listen to him. He actually said this in the Mississippi State game last year, “I know all of you Georgia fans are thinking about your BIG PRIME TIME SHOWDOWN in Austin next week. But what you had better be thinking about is having to go to Starkville and face the Mississippi State Bulldogs next year on their field!” That guy is a freaking doosh.
As for the Georgia radio broadcast team, I thought Howard and Zeire were good. Scott Howard doesn’t bother me like he does a lot of people. He used to back when he did all that high pitched screaming. I think he was just trying too hard and/or was nervous about following Munson. Since he has settled down he’s pretty good I think.
My wife even complains when a woman is announcing. Especially in a sport they never played.
More or less, having been indoctrinated to UGA football on the tracks vs the north avenue fucking trade school, while holding a front pew seat worshiping at the church of Lawrence Harry Munson…the easier question is “Who is/was, good/better/best at college football announcing”…radio or tv….GO DAWGS!!
I haven’t really listened to the radio call much since Munson passed. Howard had an impossible job being the guy to follow him, but even with that said I’m not a Howard fan. He screeches into the mic too much on big plays and he has tried to create his “hobnailed boot” or “sugar falling from the sky” moments, but they come off forced and corny as hell. “McConkey on his donkey” is just flat out embarrassing and maybe the most cringe worthy call I’ve ever heard.
Howard seems to be mellowing a little, or maybe I’m getting used to him. I liked Zeier as a player and color guy.
I have muted the TV broadcast on occasion, especially if Georgia wasn’t playing well and I got sick if Danielson’s tongue bathing of the opponent (eye twitches)…
I mostly watch the Skycam now so I don’t have to listen to some moron who is apparently getting paid by the syllable.
Danielson tongue bathing is really a good way to describe it. I hated hearing it – even when he was talking about us. Many times I thought: “You finished yet? (He never would though…) Go clean yourself up!”
Stafford to Henderson to beat the Gumps was a good’un from Howard…just sayin..
I would do a really good job with this.
Just sayin…
When Larry retired he said that he wanted them to have an open mic competition.
Much like ignoring Vince’s advice on his replacement, I think they messed up there.
You either understand what made Munson special, or you don’t. Never got the impression that Howard understood it.
Can anyone name a famous Scott Howard call? Will we ever listen to recordings during a tailgate?
I can name an weird and embarrassing one:
“A ringo stole my baby!”
Dude. Greatest moment in over 40 years and we get that shit?
I think it was actually “And Alabama? A Ringo ate yo baby”.
Which is actually worse.
Scott probably had that written down somewhere waiting to spring it on us.
I don’t think Larry ever had any preconceived notion of what he would say in any moment. I think he just understood that what he was describing was a drama.
You got the set up before the game. You understood the consequences and he let the flow of the game dictate how that story fit within that drama.
But no matter what, it was going to be dramatic. Whether a glorious victory or a terrible defeat, the outcome of the game mattered and mattered more than anything else in your life at that moment.
And none of it was about “critique.” Not of a player or of a decision. He wasn’t trying to tell us how football savvy he was.
He was writing a live action play in real time and he always knew who the good guys were.
The Ringo/dingo and McConkey/donkey calls were some of the worst things I’ve ever heard. Maybe just as dad was the clock striking midnight call where he does the “euh, euuuhhh, euuuuuhhhh, no-o-o-o-o-o goooooo-hud” nonsense.
I wish he had referred to McConkey as Ladd the Impaler like some here or on DawgSports did.
My outburst when Ruggles missed the field goal at midnight was: “God blocked it!” I don’t know that you could really say that on the radio broadcast, but it leaves less of a question about the kick than his call did(which I didn’t hear until later).
Seems like “ol’ lady luck blocked it!” would be fun in that moment. or something like that.
Can’t stand Dinich. I like Scott Howard…but following Munson well…
EZ was very good. I DEFINITELY like that Shock replaced Loren…who had really drifted…I think Brock will be different and brings something different.
I grew up with Munson and I was fifty when he retired. I’ve not listened to a Georgia football radio broadcast since. It’s just not the same. That’s no reflection on the people who took over. Munson was an original. The kind of announcer that doesn’t really exist anymore. There was a time when it was acceptable for those involved with football to be a bit salty. Guys like Spurrier were good for the game in my opinion. I hated him when he was on the opposite sideline. But the rest of the season I made sure to listen to his interviews. He was a hand grenade with the pin pulled. You never knew when he might let go of the handle. Mike Leach? He cracked me up. Getting back to announcers, when the Braves were terrible and Skip Carey was still drinking, well, those were some interesting games to listen to. One night Carey said if we promised to buy all their sponsor’s products we had his permission to change the channel. Comedic gold. Can you imagine anyone saying that today?
I like Scott on the calls more than many here, but not enough to try to sync the radio up. With the delay, there’s no enjoyment of watching a play 30 seconds after the radio call.
This is the first I’d heard that Zeier isn’t on the broadcast anymore. What happened?
– Dawg Vegas
From what I can gather, it’s to focus more on family and life outside of the broadcast.
I was gonna say he was losing his hearing from Scott’s shrieking and had to give it up, but you’re probably correct. 🙂
Dinich is an “expert” because ESPN said so. Otherwise, she is a two bagger.
with drawstrings.
love it ! Have not heard that one before.
You from LaGrange, brother?
yep, class of 65
Never listen to the hometown crew on games so don’t really know how I like them. Once Munson was done I had little interest in someone else. Larry was, is, and always will be the Voice of the Dawgs. We always watch with a rowdy group so it’s irrelevant who’s making the call on the tube. I fully agree with everyone on Beth Mowins, just terrible to listen to. I feel like she can take a great game and make it a chore to watch.
Heather Dinich is an ACC shill, which is sort of like being a Pepsi rep in Georgia: perpetually coming up short and having a chip on your shoulder.
Gosh darn it! Y’all are funny today!
I’m sure Scott Howard is a great guy, but I just can’t listen to him. He’s terrible. I listen to other announcers on SiriusXM and the only ones that rival him for being bad are the Tennessee announcers and the Auburn announcers.
Howard’s announcing is the drizzling shits.
