With three under 12 in my house, I’d love to have an opportunity like this. I wished that going to Georgia games was a McDonough family tradition; alas, financially, we can’t swing it. This opportunity for a game like Austin Peay or Charlotte would be a welcomed event in our house, and maybe in yours, too.
If it wasn’t going to Georgia games, what’s your most celebrated family tradition, sports-related or not.
On another note, what was your first Georgia game with a family member, and what do you remember most about it?
Well, the first one was while my mom was expectant with me one fall in the early 70’s; I have no recollection of the game of course but she and Dad chose my middle name from one of the Georgia players. (Neither parent attended Georgia)
The next game I attended with them was my freshman year vs Vandy. I got hammered with my date in the student section for the 1:00 kick, then they took us to dinner.
My first game was in Sept 1978, I was a little streak of piss…we shut out Clempzen…hated the color urnge ever since…my Grandfather and great uncle used so many colorful expressions that I had never heard before…even to this day, that memory is my “happy place” in my mind.
We bought a used open bow motor boat when our two girls were small and that was the best $7500 I ever spent. We had countless weekends at the lake swimming and skiing and I sold it for $5000 ten years later.
You mentioned how expensive family entertainment (games, etc.) can be and it reminded me of how cheap that boat worked out for us and how much fun we got out of it.
“Never make a handshake deal while sharing someone’s bottle,
Never buy a boat son, that doesn’t have a throttle”…..
First game was UGA vs Tennessee Sanford stadium 2000 21-10 with my dad. His first game too. Core memory.
For years we visited Santa at Lennox and rode the pink pig. Sadly the pig is gone and I won’t go near Lennox mall anymore. I guess it doesn’t matter since my youngest will be 15 this Christmas.
We were the same. Pictures with Santa at Phipps followed by the Pink Pig. We were crushed when they shut it down.
We would go to Phipps, Santa was a car guy that was searching for 40 Ford opera coupe. After we’d go see the Macy’s tree and dinner often at Everybody’s Pizza.
We rode the Pink Pig downtown. Later in high school, I worked at the downtown Rich’s. Great summer job way back then.
My first game was with my wife to be. The reason this was memorable, that was the day Herchel ran for 9000 yards. Bought the tickets on the street.
vs. Ole Miss 1978.
First time in Athens.
I knew that was the place for me.
I attended most every home game from 1986 when I matriculated as a freshman until 2014 when my now former wife convinced me to finally give up our season tickets for a variety of reasons (too many activities for our kids, time commitments etc.) I attended games with a myriad of family members over the years with both good and bad memories. I took my Dad (who went to Ohio St) to the season opener in 2005 against Boise and he loved every minute of it. On the way home, he said he finally understood why I loved going to Athens for game. My Dad was also there (along with my middle child) for the 2006 homecoming game against Vandy when we lost and found out on the way home that my paternal grandmother had passed away from a cerebral hemorrhage at Presbyterian Village in Austell while we were at the game. Happier memories were the Auburn games of 2007 (blackout) and 2012 – I love beating Auburn. My middle child was with us in 2012 and he got to meet Aaron Murray and his family on Jackson St when we were walking back to our car after our post game dinner Downtown. But I think my favorite memory will be this season. I am helping my youngest move into his dorm on Thursday in Athens. He didn’t really get a chance to go to many games before we stopped getting season tickets. I haven’t been to a game in Sanford in a long while, but I am looking forward to spending a little bit of game time with him watching the Bulldogs beat Texas in November.
BTW, that video was great! The smaller schools still have fun with it.
My first WLOCP was 89. We stayed south of Jax and ate at Park’s Seafood in Daytona after the game. One year after a Win, the owner served us Gator Tail on the house. He was a good guy and Gator season ticket holder. So, we’d talk football when waiting for a table when we were down on vaction. Going south on I95 was fun after a W, it was all Gator flags, and magnets on the way up and we’d be the only one flying our colors on the way back.
I’m a little fuzzy on the details because this was a long time ago. My dad took me to a home game when I was four or five years old. That would have made this in 1964 or 1965. I think UGA was playing North Carolina. My main memory was having to stand on the wooden bleachers because I was too little to see anything if I sat down.
1983 opener vs UCLA. Charlie Dean pick sixed Neuheisel for about 75 yards to save us in the 4th quarter in a driving rainstorm. Dawgs win, i think 19-8. Buddy of mine named Evan Williams accompanied me.
The year they ambushed my Illini in the Rose Bowl. My trip to LA was not as fun as the Dawgs Rose Bowl.
My first was UGA vs Pitt with my dad. 7-7 that day and Pitt featured a freshman named Tony Dorsett. Not sure if he ever went on to do anything.
The Butler 60 yarder to beat Clemson !!
I don’t recall the whole Georgia was playing, but I do recall throwing a Nerf football with my grandfather at a tailgate in the late ’70’s. My grandfather lives food, cocktails, and entertaining so he was a large man around 280lbs. I threw him a pass that was a bit high and when he reached up to catch it he sucked in his stomach which caused his pants to drop down around his ankles! My dad and uncles were dying with laughter watching that happen. That is my memory. I don’t even recall is Georgia won or not…lol
I also remember attending a game Georgia won at Tech around that same time. My biggest memory from that game was getting a fuzzy red and black football with the block G on it that my cousin and used to play knee football with when we got home.
