  2. It’s close enough to Woody Hayes to dispel the notion that what we are watching on defense is not part of a multi-dimensional chess strategy by Kirby to lull the opposition into the notion that we don’t have a competent defense. If so. I’m sure they’re all convinced now.

    Had that tirade been directed at the stripes we would have seen a flag.

    CKS will apologize for that one asap.

    • This was Kirby’s comment on the issue

      After the game, Smart addressed the moment from his perspective.

      “I think I was going after [defensive coordinator Glenn] Schumann,” Smart said. “I was trying to get Schumann’s attention. We were trying to change personnel. I think it’s the play they came over to our sideline and trying to get Schumann’s attention. But, no, I don’t really remember it.”

  6. From watching that several times, it doesn’t look like he even knew who he was shoving. He was LASER focused on giving Schumann an earful and someone or something got in his way. I doubt he even realized it was an opposing player. If it had been Marybeth or his mother, I suspect he would not have noticed and would have done the same thing. It doesn’t excuse it, but I’m just glad he wasn’t “going after” the opposing team’s player. That would have been a whole different level. Not a good look either way. He may want to switch to decaf on game day.

  7. I don’t care about this. People will act outraged but the guy he shoved was wearing full pads and could beat Kirby to death. And it wasn’t much of a shove. This is not a big deal. And I don’t think he realized it was a Mississippi State player.

Coaches shove their own players all of the time; to get them out of skirmishes, keep them from mouthing off to refs, celebrate big plays etc. Kirby probably didn’t realize who it was and made an honest mistake here but it’s a nothing burger IMO. He will likely apologize this week, but perhaps he should also consider simmering down just a tad. In other news Shuman should polish his resume up.

  9. I can tell you my wife was upset by this. I had a meh reaction to it feeling Kirby never saw him & was laser focused on yelling at Schumann. After watching it a few times & hearing Kirby shrug it off in the post-game, I do think he needs to address it & get it put to bed. Like I said, didn’t bother me but in today’s world, unfortunately, things like this need to be taken care of & put behind you. I guess we’ll see this week if the media wants to create something out of it.

    • EE, don’t know if I’ve been relegated to idiot or a Tech fan by pointing out the fact that for whatever reason, Kirby lost situational awareness. Yes, the defense was providing him with a multitude of distractions, but, he’s the head coach, the adult in charge. He must be held to a higher standard, IMO. In the video, https://www.youtube.com/shorts/mzIt9jqtFLk the player is in Kirby’s line of sight, but Kirby was white-hot focused on getting to Schumann. Probably with a long list of issues.
      Agreed, Kirby didn’t grab the player by the throat, but he did give him a nice forearm shiver. It was unnecessary and looks bad for the program.
      I am not a Kirby detractor. I’ve been happier than a pig in sh*t since he arrived. I believe offense wins games and defense wins championships. Erk was a God and the 2021 season was the first season in forty years my blood pressure stayed under Hank Aaron’s batting average during football season. “First one to 50 wins the game” is not my idea of a game plan. I think we miss Boom tremendously.
      If still confused with being a Tech fan, I will continue to explain, but would probably only prove out your correlative conjunction.

      • He lost situational awareness, but the Woody Hayes thing is he takes a swing at the Clemson player after he makes a play that wins the game for the Greater Anderson Cow College. It was completely different.

  12. This will be handled at the Monday presser so it doesn’t get any more legs than it deserves. It was one of the few plays I actually saw live and I didn’t think anything of it at the time. Knew he was fuming at Schu, which was well deserved. Unfortunate accident.
