With control of all branches of government, surely a return to the Garden is imminent.
As I imagine that there are the apprehensive, realistic and hopeful among the readership, I thought we would see where are minds are.
What are your top three fears, top three hopes, and what are the top three things the hardened cynic in you think are most likely to happen over the next two years? Please include any reasoning as necessary.
I’ll start.
Fears:
- the debt bubble explodes and is handled just as deftly as Covid.
- the recent grant of Presidential immunity is abused at home. A Reichstag fire type of an event as one possible example.
- Ukraine is handled in a way that emboldens China to act similarly towards Taiwan and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea towards the South.
Hopes:
- that the GOP takes its austerity language seriously and makes unpopular choices that risks their majorities. Think LBJ on civil and voting rights, but with policies on spending. While I may not appreciate the choices and priorities, it would be refreshing to see and it could re-set the country towards a responsible economic future that is very badly needed.
- that institutional resistance to the worst instincts will hold firm and/or that we find that there is a line out there that cannot be crossed for the majority leadership, save proposing raising taxes on the super rich. We know that would send them with a rope down Pennsylvania Avenue. I hope that there is at least a second thing upon which they, collectively, would put the country first.
- that they pass some immigration law so that, whatever that looks like, immigration is no longer the political football that its been in recent cycles.
Reality:
- no significant and helpful changes in revenue or spending. The debt curve sees no real change, it actually gets worse, and we find a way to pass off 40+ trillion of debt on to the next holder of the office.
- culture warrior nonsense will substitute for actual legislative accomplishment that might help people and the left will be blamed for stopping them succeed because in truth they need more than just a majority, they need every seat in Congress and then they’d do it! You’ll see!
- lots of insanity. Executive Order to end birthright citizenship. Threatening to end the federal reserve. Government shutdowns. Refusal to raise the debt ceiling. The “greatest appointments ever!” on day 1 shortly followed by exits and bitter name calling. Lots of graft and corruption endorsed by the handpicked Office of Legal Counsel. Obscene transfer of wealth to the President and no possible way to have any accountability whatsoever. The White House becomes the center for pay for play politics in a way that would make Tammany Hall blush and that endures beyond 2028 until Congress acts or the Supreme Court reverses the immunity decision.
Bonus questions:
- Because there is no need for reelection, I am curious about what will most animate the next two years? Typical political and historic posterity, i.e., “legacy” or will it be an aberrant second term that focuses nearly exclusively on the personal and the transactional? I have no answer on this one though I hope it leans towards legacy.
- What are the odds of a third impeachment vote in 2027? I would think the betting odds should approach 100%. He’ll do (or has done) something we haven’t heard about or will hear about soon. Immunity from prison may embolden someone, but it will also initiate a political response.

Why can’t we have open borders, senselessly high gas and food prices due to cutting off our own energy independence, and a position of weakness around the world while pushing for a third world war? whb209, I’m convinced you know nothing about economics. It’s not about whether we build processing plants for our own oil, it’s that we have enough oil to sell to other countries. That’s what we were doing when 45 was in office. Now, 46 comes in, stops the oil pipeline and starts buying oil from other countries, then when gas prices go through the roof, he starts depleting our oil reserves which is supposed to be used for emergencies to help with gas inflation.
Regarding your last sentence: You will be wrong.

OK. It’s best done over a fire in a cast iron cauldron. These amounts make about 3 gallons and you can play with it to suit your tastes. For the basic you need:
5# pork butt bone in
5-7# hen
3# beef chuck bone in
2 large onions
Fresh cayenne peppers
2 cans whole kernel corn
46 oz can tomato juice
1 pint cider vinegar
Salt (fine, no iodine)
Black pepper
Block down the meat until its roughly equally sized pieces. Put it all together in the pot, cover by an inch or two with water. Add 1/4 cup of salt and a few shakes of pepper. Over the fire let it simmer until the meat falls off the bone. Remove meat from stock and half the stock from the pot, reserve but keep the remainder hot over the fire. Debone meat then grind with a coarse die the meat and all the remaining solid ingredients together, return to the pot. Stir to prevent sticking. Stir in tomato juice and vinegar, taste for seasoning. Bring it all up to a simmer (a “thump” as we call it) and taste again for salt and spice. The stew needs to be just consistent enough to stand a wooden spoon in. If it’s too thick add reserved stock. If it’s too thin let it cook down.
That’s it. It just takes practice and time.
