So maybe a little bit of the Carson Beck ordeal is coming to light. Wisconsin is calling “tampering” while others are calling “bullshit”.
A few items here.
- Universities don’t have a “binding” contract with athletes, as NIL is paid through collectives and not universities.
Stating such would effectively make an athlete an employee of the university, which they currently are not. - The MOU here is trumped by NCAA rules, which states that a university is obligated to place a player into the portal upon request.
Apparently, the B$G stands behind Wisconsin.
Wisconsin has yet to prove tangible evidence of tampering, which in and of itself is a dangerous place to be since everyone is getting litigious. Interesting how the conference in calling for reform while simultaneously dying on a hill that they control an athlete’s rights as personal property. This, while the enlightened fan base that refers to itself as “B1G fans” likens the SEC’s dominance in football to “modern slavery” because conference teams were the only ones in college football paying players under the table for all those Nattys the past two decades.
Not a good look from a conference that clearly could only level the playing field by dipping into their relevance hungry fan-base coffers to buy an attempt at a national championship. If literally standing on the sidelines to steal plays wasn’t enough, they are hedging their future on outbidding everyone else to win, and they can’t have any pesky teams from the South stealing their glory.

I was thinking that Beck declaring for the NFL could’ve been a smokescreen since it was already speculated that he was transferring to Miami before that. I didn’t think the draft made a lot of sense because of his injury and somewhat down year that he had. I assumed that he just didn’t want to go straight to the U from UGA out of respect for his team, coaches, fans, etc. so declaring was a way to put a little time/space between the transfer. However, I never considered tampering concerns as possibility being a part of that decision as well. Interesting🤔!
Can the B1G do anything to make themselves more worthy of our hate? Sanctimonious douche bags is the only way to describe them.
There is reporting out there noting that there are several contingencies in his MOU with Wisconsin that have yet to come to fruition. Also, Wisconsin has not paid him anything from that deal. Lastly, he has not signed with the Miami football program. So to me, the only thing that’s really worth talking about here is whether Miami tampered. And as you noted, no one has provided any evidence of same.
I’m not a lawyer but I would think the “bargaining in good faith” legal clause might be what Wisconsin might pursue to try an prove their case given the legal limitations of the NCAA.
Poor Wisconsin! If only they belonged to an entity that collectively negotiates or if their president was part of a national organization who appoints people to set rules and enforce them via voluntary compliance of its members. As long as such entities stay strictly focused on the welfare of the children and not how to grab and hold onto billions of dollars generated by those children with no thought of sharing then they wouldn’t have such a terrible problem.
Whatever.
Tampering is as least as old as the Fields transfer to anOSU.
What is WI going to do? Force the kid to come back and play his heart out for a program he’ll likely now hate?
Miami is a program that likely believes it can go rogue under the cover of all the turmoil, confusion and frustration that came out of Pandora’s box as NIL and the transfer portal.
And sadly, they’re probably correct in that belief.
