Welp, the ghosts of last year returned yesterday in what was largely a boring, listless and mistake-filled performance by the Dawgs against an overmatched opponent. Sure, the weather was a distraction and the OL is down to third-stringers on the right side, but what excuse does the rest of the offense have? I’m just glad the Gators got upset, because that was probably the most nauseating win since…oh, just last year. Vibe check: no bueno. The last thing this team needs before heading to Kneeland is a bunch of OL injuries and 10 different things to fix on one side of the ball. Since I was so bothered by this game and I have to travel in a few hours, I’m going to try to abbreviate the bullets and stay as positive as I can.
- First off, I was enjoying watching the early games (yes, Arch continues to struggle) and had no clue our game was even moved up until someone on our text thread said it had already started. Then the ESPN app on my phone sucked at getting me caught up quickly because it required you to watch 3 minutes of ads instead of skipping through. Assholes.
- In retrospect, maybe I shouldn’t have gone back to the beginning, because those first two drives were horrible. Nate Frazier’s fumble was embarrassing, and the OL was a sieve. Jah Jackson seemed to have a lot of promise for this year, but he ain’t ready for primetime. He looked very slow on his feet and lacked intensity on his punches. So much for basketball players looking athletic on a football field. If Austin Peay’s guys can get around you in one second, trouble brews in Knoxville.
- So many missed assignments on the interior and the right side from Jackson and Michael Uini, it made me wonder whether they had been coached this week at all. This wasn’t Bama, Texas, Tennessee. I felt like Coach 30 was next to me on the sofa talking about them being scared and pissing down their legs.
- Then the unthinkable happens and even Jah gets hurt. Still no sign of Hughley, which was weird because I thought he did fine last week. They kicked Uini outside to tackle and moved in Glover at guard, and actually those two did better in those spots, but that’s relative to the performance that preceded them. This line is dangerously thin.
- The next drive was a lot better, but only because Chauncey Bowens ran like a man possessed, breaking tackles left and right. We may need a lot of that going forward.
- Colbie Young, who Austin Peay refused to cover within 10 yards all day, played aggressive as well and probably led the team in YAC.
- Another bright spot was Oscar Delp, whose blocking has been so transformed I don’t even recognize him out there.
- Gunner looked hesitant all day, and even though Kirby said Peay was playing a lot of deep safety looks, I saw at least a couple plays where the deep man was open and Gunner either missed him or refused to throw the ball. I have no idea what’s happening with him on these plays at this point. Is he being over-coached and confused at what he’s seeing? I feel like he’s the kind of kid that just needs to play free.
- The drops returned, and they were bad yesterday. I hope to not have to mention this again.
- Yet another goal line stand by what should be an overmatched and undersized opponent. How these guys couldn’t punch it in against Austin Peay on 6 plays inside the 10 is beyond me. Bookmarking that series for Stacy Searels. Kirby was seen yelling at Nate for not getting in but the entire right side of the line missed their blocks and deserved the rant more than Nate.
- London Humphreys, hold on to the ball. I know it was wet by then, but that was bad.
- Any positive comments, you say? Yes! The defense did what they were supposed to do, shut down an inferior opponent. The DL flashed with Hall and Miller playing well, as did the edges (Harris, Modozie and Q) and LBs, all of whom look terrific. They will be critical next week, so I’m glad they’re all healthy and performing well.
- Daylen Everette was back, which was really important so he could have his game legs for Tennessee. They attacked Demello Jones and got him a couple times, but that’s fine since he’s our 4th DB and is still developing.
- One more positive: the Thunder From Down Under returned and looked great! So good to have Thorson back.
Looking at the scoreboard at halftime was embarrassing and the final score was not what we’re looking for as fans. The weather was a bummer as well, the broadcast was shitty and all these injuries are piling up. Just bad vibes all around, feeling like last year. Anybody have a connection with a exorcist? Tennessee more than took care of business, sending a message to the mighty Southern Conference that they can keep throwing deep passes into the 4th quarter and embarrass your lesser athletes more than is necessary. Congrats? Anyway, it’s going to be a very difficult game for the Dawgs if Greene can’t play RT, and frankly even if he can. We’re about to find out what kind of team we have this year. Go Dawgs!
I did see 55 in Q3 – he pancaked a 180lb DB & celebrated like 1999.
I wasn’t as critical of OL. Actually thought as the game chugged along, they played fairly good.
As Chase Daniel noted, 14 is scared and not scanning the field well for down receivers. He missed many “BIG” opportunities!

Chase Daniel has a potato for a brain. He kept screaming that Gunner didn’t see his downfield receivers. Gunner pump faking while looking in their direction. Daniel is a freaking idiot. Gunner’s problem clearly was not that he couldn’t see his receivers. It was that he’s too scared of throwing an INT to let it go. I never played quarterback a day in my life and I can see that a big part of Gunner’s problem is he’s too worried about turning the ball over.
I think that’s right. He’s got to trust his arm.

It’s not that Im happy about it. It’s just that I don’t see it as the final word onnthe season because through two games they played one where they looked like shit. Did we also think Florida was awesome because they beat up on Long Island in week one? I didn’t.
I didn’t either. I never said the season was ruined or they need to fire Kirby. But they didn’t perform well against a bad team, and that’s disappointing. There’s also been more injuries at a position group that requires continuity. And now the QB is playing hesitant. Those are three real problems and they’re headed into a tough environment next week. I still think they’re better than Tennessee, but I’m concerned about how they are going to play.
But pass protection improved noticeably in the second half. Nobody can do anything about injuries. I have some suspicions all these ankle injuries over the last few years are because maybe we need different cleats but I can’t prove that. I just get sick of all the woe is me stuff. Maybe the offense does suck. But there is no way to know that yet. To me the main problem is Gunner is too afraid of making mistakes right now. The rest of it yesterday is just a product of that. It ain’t “Oh we just have so many issues!” Bullshit. We’ve got a new quarterback who played not to lose yesterday.
We can agree to disagree about the OL play, because I saw Austin Peay guys running free all day.

I enjoy these post-game observation pieces and appreciate getting them quickly on Sundays. That said, I wouldn’t mind waiting a day if it meant having a post-rewatch version, like we used to see. I often wait till the evening or the next morning to do my posts so the emotion is not there. I agree that Chase Daniel was terrible, but I think it was his second broadcast ever. So I took all of his comments with a grain of salt.
Gunner threw it poorly behind him where it wasn’t as catchable and Cash got his hands on it and didn’t make the catch. Both would probably tell you they were at fault.
It’s a great point, and I’ve been thinking about that myself. I’ve just been too busy with work to spend another 2 hours watching the replay. These are meant to be first glance observations and obviously I’m not Kirby Smart so reasonable people can disagree.

Starting a season with back to back cupcakes it’s hard to tell what we have. Was Gunner afraid to let it rip downfield with receivers clearly open. Or was he not looking down field or saving that for next week. I’m not at practice so I have no idea. He didn’t look comfortable often giving up on his reads quickly. Or staring down a target. Too many picks last week in practice who knows. Pretty sure we are about to find out next week.

I doubt that any of us are elated with the way things went yesterday, and not even last week if I’m honest, but we’ve seen this before under Kirby. Other teams start out pounding the ever living crap out of lesser opponents and then get embarrassed by competent-but-not-great teams. Yes, I’m looking at you, Gators. The only time I remember Kirby teams starting a season well is when they were playing a game at the Benz or other other similar opening week venue against Oregon or Clemson or some such. In other words, we’ve seen this before. I’m not saying that Kirby is playing 3-D chess and everyone else is playing checkers against their grandkids, but it’s wrong to be panicked yet. 15-0 until we aren’t.
Totally agree and hope it’s the same story this year. Last year it wasn’t, which is the reason I have concerns. 🤞🏼

Do we have some serious problems on offense that need fixing. ABSOLUTELY.
Anyone who thinks the offense if not a mess right now is a Disney Dawg or Helen Keller. The line is sub par so far. It’s not missed assignments (probably the result of lack of continuity due to injury and fixable) that are so concerning. It’s that they are often getting manhandled at the point of attack when its straight up hat on hat and can’t seem to handle speed. The dropsies seem to have returned. Running game inconsistent. Gunner not sure of himself?
Is it fixable with what we have? I sure hope so. We shall soon find out.

The sub par line is filled with future NFL players. The running game is legit. Pass protection wasn’t good in the first half where two starters were out. It got much better in the second half. I saw Kirby’s press conference and listened to him talking to DJ onnthe radio after the game. Kirby isnt saying we have major problems and that our offensive line is terrible. Toni t close to that. Let’s not misrepresent and act like Kirby is part of the sky is falling mob. The worst thing about all that is that it’s couched as “realism” and it’s nothing close to realistic.
If I’m Kirby I hold a meeting with the entire offense early Monday morning, show the final 2 minutes of the first half and blister their asses. Then go run short yardage drills for 90 minutes until they’re all puking. Then I make it clear this conversation is not happening again or some NIL deals will be cancelled due to cuts. Good breakdown and I think it matches up fairly well with your original assessment.
So, is Brooks Austin going to tell Murray that he’s all wrong and everything is alright? At the 14:30 mark Murray makes the observation that the call is right, but the execution of the line is missing “and this happened a bunch last week”. When he breaks it down, you see that Bobo has dialed up the right play, but the execution is missing. Searles and his bunch have a ton of work to do. Hopefully Gunner gets more comfortable, and the game slows down for him as he gains experience. He’s got the talent and as Kirby said in his interview, he wants to see him do in the game what he shows them in practice.
See my last. Brooks had a ton of criticisms too in his video. They agree on a lot, but because Brooks gets hyped when any of the OL do anything right it comes across like they did better than they did. At best it was a mixed bag, but since it was against a poverty program, the bar should be higher. Both Murray and Brooks say that too, if one would care to listen to the negative comments.
So glad I watched Brooks’ film session tonight. It’s full of the same criticisms I had and Murray had. He definitely picked out some good plays by each of the OL, but they were at least equally matched by critiques. He was also critical of Gunner. Guess we all hear what we want to hear, eh?
Has anyone seen any news about right guard and right tackle being back for Tennessee? Or are they both out for an extended time frame?

We’ve had stinkers before and overall came out fine at the end of the season. Saturday’s win wasn’t particularly satisfying but we won, so there’s that.
I expect a much more focused effort this coming Saturday. I want to see the stand emptying early so the hillbillies can go home and butt-chug their sadness away.
I hear ya, Russ. We had the same problem in 2022. But we also had it the last 2 years when we failed to beat the better teams on our schedule in those years. The problem that I see is that the roster on the OL and QB isn’t the same as before. Can they develop in time has always been the biggest question. Right now I’m just hoping that the defense and special teams can carry them.
