Movin’ On Up: Georgia Coordinator Gets a Promotion to Associate Head Coach

I’m sure that headline caused some of y’all’s blood pressure to suddenly rise.

My guess is, the move was made to put Williams back on par with where he had been at USC prior to coming to Georgia. You can guess what the credentials are that might have landed Williams a promotion.

Williams’ duties include coaching Georgia’s cornerbacks. In 2024 junior cornerback Daylen Everette earned third-team All-SEC honors from the coaches after tallying 58 tackles, a team-high 3 interceptions, and 1 sack. Georgia’s 2024 defense as a whole finished 38th nationally in pass defense with 200.2 yards per game allowed. The Bulldogs posted an 11-3 record, captured the SEC championship, and reached the College Football Playoff quarterfinals during Williams’ first season on staff.

Williams has also gotten the job done on the recruiting trail. He helped the Bulldogs sign the No. 3 recruiting class in the country during the 2025 cycle. That class included four-star cornerbacks Jontae Gilbert and Dominick Kelly.

Williams came to Georgia after four seasons at USC. He was initially named USC cornerbacks coach and defensive pass game coordinator in February 2020 and added the title of associate head coach that December. He was tabbed Trojans interim head coach in September 2021 following the dismissal of Clay Helton. He posted a 3-7 overall record turning his time at the helm of the USC program.

Williams spent the previous two seasons at Oregon as the Ducks’ cornerbacks coach. The Ducks were second nationally in interceptions in 2019 (20) and 11th in 2018 (17). 247Sports named Williams the nation’s seventh-best recruiter and top recruiter in the Pac-12 for the class of 2020. (emphasis added).

It would be nice to see those interception numbers tick upward a bit in Athens, Donte. The Georgia unit netted 7 interceptions in 2024, with the team leader being Everette (3) followed by Dan Jackson (2). I know…front seven and all…still, let’s see those recruiting wins turn into turnover wins, too.

  1. Maybe he’ll have more of a say about getting after those running QBs instead of sitting back.

  2. You must be right about making him whole after the USC money went away, because I can’t imagine there were a ton of suitors for his services. I just think it’s odd that Bobo wouldn’t be the associate head coach, since he’s the only full-time assistant to have held a permanent D-I head coaching position previously.

  3. Gave up 200 yards a game it wasn’t like he coached up any shut down corners…the best he could put on the field was Everette and Humphrys and the only guys Happy about Humphry’s was Everette and the other OC….

    • I felt Bad about that right after I posted it…Lord Forgive me and Bless the starving pygmy’s in Africa…
