Making the Spring Game More Interesting

Matt Rhule seems to want to shy away from a spring game because someone else might do what he does so well – poaching players. Yeah, that’s old news, and a new trend among college football coaches who are counting tampering in alongside player safety and fatigue from an extended season in the new playoff model.

Deion Sanders and Fran Brown would like to have a word.

Now THAT’S interesting. Somehow, I’d imagine you could sell tickets at a standard price and get a decent crowd to come to town and watch an “unofficial” game between two teams. I think you’d have to put in some parameters, like a snap count limit for your ones, twos, and threes to limit possible injury, but I kind of like the concept.

If we moved to a model like this, who would we like to scrimmage? I’d think someone we don’t traditionally play and who is out of conference. From a previous post about possible SEC expansion, I saw many of you would like to see UNC in the SEC, so would that be our scrimmage partner? Would we boot for a FCS team? Group of 5 team? Mercer? UCF?

Curious who you’d like to see if the Spring Game moved to a competitive scrimmage model with another team?

  1. My preference has always been to play local non-P5 teams for the spring game. Rotate between Mercer, Southern, State, some HBCU schools. Think that would be fun.

  2. How about an old timer vs varsity game? Those are usually good for a few laughs. A few rules to keep the old timers alive, etc.

  3. I’d love to see a scrimmage against a team that we used to play often in the distant past, but haven’t seen in a while and may never schedule again. Maybe UNC or Tulane.

  4. Dabo has asked for this for years. I vote Georgia plays 2 spring games every year. One in Sanford stadium and one at Clemson.

    • This is it. Limit travel expense. One Saturday in Athens and next Saturday in Clemson. Good competition will bring out the best. Also the teams would have to agree no recruiting the opposing players/no transfers between the schools.

  5. I hope Deion and Fran can pull this off. I’d watch it!!! Would love to see Dawgs v Clem, FSU, UNC. Home one year, away the next.

    • No, he doesn’t. But…I would love to see Fran Brown take his team out there and stomp a mud hole in their ass. Coach Brown has got that ‘Dawg’ in him.

  6. The mighty Air Force Falcons on a home & home exchange. Train at altitude like Olympians do and I get to show the local weed & shroom crowd what real college football is all about.
