Huddle Up 08.21.2024

Good morning! 10 days to go! Less than 2 weeks! I’m ready! You ready?

#10. I’ve always been partial to this guy, he was before my time as far as watching college football goes but, I always admired him. But, seems there is friction between him and the fanbase? Is that correct? Or am I off-base? If, I am right, what is all that about?

Watch this and then go have a cigarette, we’ll wait…

If ya missed it yesterday, the Fabris Pool will continue this season. If you would like to pit your prognosticating ability against the rest of your fellow Refugees, here’s your opportunity!

  1. Fran was way before my time as a player. Later on he seemed absent from anything uga related. I know he had a lot going on. For the first 20 years after he left, he was without question the most prominent former or current UGA player out there, and then an easy second, but I’d be willing to bet the vast majority of NFL fans in the 1970’s didn’t know where he played his college ball.

Then later still, the first time you hear from him on anything related to the program and its negative, negative, negative. I wish he had been more of an ambassador over the years. But that’s up to him. Had he been, I wouldn’t have held it against him for taking shots. I don’t think any player owes it to us to remain connected, but if you aren’t, stay that way in good times and bad. Same rules apply the other way around.

I know he was an Athens kid and there are probably a lot of things I just don’t know, but my perception was that he had faded from public consciousness only to grasp at a little lost relevance at our expense and at an inopportune time. For someone who seemingly was never much interested in promoting his connection to the program, doing it at that time and in that way struck me wrong.

  2. I read the story about him the last time we played in Austin in 1958. He was backing up Charlie Britt, but felt like he should be playing. Britt got his bell rung, so Fran ran onto the field and put himself into the game. Drove the Dawgs down to take the lead but they couldn’t hold on for the win.

Apparently, he didn’t get along with Butts (not many did in those days) and (I believe) Whitworth essentially coached him and other players.

Not sure why he was absent from the program, and I did get tired of his sniping, but he’s still a DGD in my mind.

  3. That’s the longest/tallest he’s ever looked in my life. I had no idea he played for Georgia until quite a bit into my life. Personally Zeier is the #10 in my lifetime… well, for Georgia QBs anyway.

  4. Well I told you I was old. When I was about 10 my folks went to visit my Uncle and Aunt that lived in Athens on a Saturday. My Dad was a big GT fan but my Uncle liked the Dawgs. Georgia was playing Auburn that day so my Uncle suggested the men go to the game. We went over to Sanford and got tickets. This turned out to be the game where UGA had Fran at QB and UGA beat Auburn for the SEC Championship.

    • These NFL coach clips are worth more than any recruiting NIL $. Or at least they should be.

  5. Fran had the balls to call it what it was when we were under signing, and getting lapped in facilities and assistant coach pay by Alabama, Florida, hell all the top tier programs. I was glad he said it and thought people getting upset by it at the time just had a case of the truth hurting.
