Getting the Band Back Together – Will We See 2017 Happen Again

No doubt that a pivotal year for Smart was 2017…getting Chubb, Michel, and Lorenzo Carter to come back was huge for pacing the way to a National Championship appearance in his second year as a coach. Will 2025 be a year where some stars return and put together something special?

Also this…

If a few key starters opt to come back alongside some new recruits and portal additions, we could be looking at something special. Time will tell, and the rest of team has until tomorrow to declare for the portal or not.

And is it possible we get one more year with the Thunder from Down Under? Will he convert to linebacker?

Oh, and in case you were wondering:

Wish him all the best, along with the other ‘Dawgs who are opting to take their chances with the League.

  1. Feel like there’s some momentum for something like this, and some more good portal news today. 🤞🏼

  2. Don’t forget Davin Bellamy in that group of DGDs who came back. He made huge plays in the ND and SECCG.

I would be surprised if Starks returns unless he got a non-R1 evaluation. Also, he seems like an unfinished business kind of guy.

    • Yeah, Starks would be crazy to return. There will be a huge injury liability policy on him if he does.

  3. Anyone hearing anything about the assistant coaches? I’ve heard multiple, conflicting information that Bobo was (1) no longer the OC and was stepping back into an analyst role(2) becoming the Co-OC with Buster Falkner and (3) not stepping down at all and remaining the OC. It’s irritating when you know that this is most likely all already “done” and we have to wait weeks if not months before we find out.

Yeah, I want Bobo gone. All of the 1st half struggles and the trouble scoring in all 3 loses. You can blame the players all you want for the drops and poor blocking, but the regression of the QB play from last year to this year? That falls on the QB coach an who was that?

    • I’ve heard much of the same though I think the stretch of those above is Faulkner coming in at UGA. Word was he was staying out for family reasons and would consider a jump to a head position or better in 2026.

Coley is going nowhere after the WR haul in the portal and on the recruiting trail. I’d say same with Searels since much of the blame is being pointed towards Luke’s recruiting shortfalls during his tenure catching up to us, and that his recruits are the likely future of the OL at UGA.

Bobo seems the most likely to follow the Muschamp model of being involved at a lesser level.

  4. Hopefuly someone takes a chance on Arian. He could make a very good living on special teams.

  5. I have zero confidence in our offense for next year. I’m back to munsoning and it won’t change until I see some results.

  6. I’m not saying that changes and upgrades aren’t welcome, but am I crazy to think that we could have probably won a national championship last season if Bowers and McConkey had been healthier in the SEC Championship, and if we’d had better receivers this season that we’d probably still be playing for one? It just seems like receiver has been our most glaring deficiency.

  7. COULD have? We WOULD have won a national championship if they weren’t injured last year. And we would have probably won the national championship this year also, if they had returned.

  8. Bobo has had the keys for 2 years. If he returns I expect all of the offensive metrics to keep going the way they went this year. Less points, more drops, more sacks, less rushing yards, etc.

    • Bobo has zero to do with the drops. You can complain about the play calling putting the offensive line in a bad place, etc., but the drops are on the player and the position coach. I’m assuming these guys aren’t dropping the ball in practice.

      • So he recruited a bunch of guys that suck? It’s amazing how many good OCs get good results their 2nd year. Its equally amazing how bobo never does.

        • Call off the names at receiver I he recruited who played significant minutes this year.

          Arian Smith? No.
          Dillon Bell? No.

I’m not saying Bobo doesn’t deserve blame for the offense this year. I guess he doesn’t get the credit for the fact that the offense scored over 40 a game and had nearly 500 yards of offense per game last year.

          • He definitely needs better players. What falls on him is the lack of improvement by Beck. I’d also argue that as the leader of the offensive room, technically no one other than Nate Frazier improved under his watch this year either.

          • That is totally fair. I heard some rumors that the relationship between Bobo and Beck wasn’t the best and Beck developed a case of the yips.

          • Interesting, I hadn’t heard that. Bobo definitely can be harsh as a coach and is an acquired taste.

          • Bobo was really disliked by most everyone during his stint as HC at CSU. Some really ugly rumors went with that. He may be tough to get along with though he’s been a great recruiter so hard to know. But there was no question the team leadership and chemistry was not obvious this year as in prior years. Smoke….fire?
