Dawglicious’ Hate Week Diary

(This isn’t the sign on I-75, that one is your standard-issue green government sign)

Dear Diary,

Mrs. Dawglicious has wondered why I refer to our reptilian adversaries as the “Handbags of Hogtown”. I could answer the handbags part easily, but really didn’t know why our GTPR community has called Gainesville “Hogtown”.

Last week, we were traveling back from Orlando on the I-75 through enemy territory* when I saw the tiny sign labeled “Hogtown Creek” by the bridge. I pointed excitedly and showed her as we hurtled by.

You learn something every day!

*We do not make pit stops in Hogtown. Family has been instructed to hold it until we get to Ocala.

  1. I was also told by a commenter at the Senator’s place back in the day that evidently the Seminoles used to trade with and/or for hogs w the white folk (I guess?) in that area, thus earning that nickname. But I’m too lazy to confirm this.

  2. Driving from Savannah to Atlanta last weekend I saw a Buc-ee’s billboard that read “Buc-ee’s 131 miles. You can hold it.” Made me laugh.

  3. there was a guy back on the oritginal DawgVent who lived down around there, used to regularly refer to it as “Hogtown.” Never really knew why, but now I do. This place is a fountain of knowledge sometimes. I am glad that mystery is finally solved.

I cant claim to have invented the term “Handbags,” but I know I was an early adopter. LOL

  4. I didn’t know why the moniker of Hogtown was used either. I used to have a girlfriend that lived in Gainesville and never saw any hogs when I visited. Glad I was informed, though many years later. Also, the level of hate I have for the Flurda Gayturds is right up there with Satan himself. Go Dawgs!!!

  5. I want to say his handle was “OldDawg” and some numbers. He used to talk about how happy he was after a Cocktail Party win because he could show up for breakfast with his local pals (all Gators) and rub it in a little. A great American.

  6. Friends moved south from Cincinnati, OH and referred to it as Hogtown because of the large slaughter houses. there.
