Ate Chik-Fil-A and seent a Star War (aka “A New Hope” for the kids) both for the the very first time with my dad in May 1977 at the Allbenny Mall.
The Mall used to be really nice and a place you could go and take the kids to just get out of the house. Unfortunately, they let the thugs take over and now there’s more empty stores than open stores. Good news is they are building an Academy Sports where the old Sears store was located. So there is hope some stores will return to the Mall.
Yeah I refer to it as the “maul”. It sucks. Lots of empty spaces where stores used to be, smells like black and milds and weed, and you know you better have your pistol in your pocket if you’re going to be there once the sun goes down. Better off just not being there at all. Albany used to be ok for a bigger sized town. It has gone the way of Columbus and Macon before it. Columbus seems like they have tried to clean up downtown and there are some good places to eat and whatnot. Macon is way too far gone. They would have to burn it down and start over. Albany is about the same way.
Bobby Garrard played for O’Keefe High, which was in the Home Park area of Atlanta and it bordered the Tech campus. Butts got him away from Bobby Dodd.
Tech under Dodd recruited the hell out of Atlanta and Decatur kids because he would offer what Tech called “City Sholarships” to a lot of those kids. A City Scholarship covered tuition and books but didn’t cover room and board under the theory that the kid could live at home with Mom and Dad and commute to class and practice from Decatur or Poncey-Highland or Kirkwood or West End or Sylvan Hills or Home Park. Tech would count those as partial scholarships and two kids would count as just one against the SEC limits. That gave Tech more talent on campus the we could have.
and they were the ones bitching about Bear and his “scholarship” practices… so they took their pocket protectors and their attitude of “our shit don’t stink” over to the shiny new box of the ACC… but inside that box was just a steamy cow sized turd of a conference… to be clear fuck tech.
Preach it, AaB!
Actually they went independent because they thought they would be another Notre Dame, except for nerds.
When that didn’t work out for them, they tried to crawl back to the SEC but had to settle for the ACC.
I noticed that, and I also notice you know your Atlanta HS history. Sylvan Hills Golden Bear here.
