  1. I was a fledgling Dawg fan in those days, elated when Dooley emerged from early-70’s doldrums back into prominence with ’75 edition. Remembering that small but scrappy defense, I’ve occasionally wondered how often a kid recruited at QB became an all conference DE!

    • Excellent rhetorical question and observation.
Back in those days coaches, not just Dooly, recruited high school QBs because they were generally the best athletes on the high school teams and because they were Excellent athletes could play other positions.
What was unique about Dicky Clark was that he actually was the freeman team QB in 1973 (they still had those in 973) and he was the starting QB in the1974 opener against Oregon State and in rather SEC opener against Mississippi State in Jackson. We got clobbered by State and the coaching staff changed QBs. The next season Clark was as defensive end.
Ironically, he scored a touchdown as a defensive end in Sanford Stadium against Mississippi State in a Georgia win in 1975. It was the go ahead TD.

        • It was! I was there in what is now section 110. It happened directly in front of me.

    • Billy Payne used to say that Dooley was good at developing HS quarterbacks….as defensive ends, safetys and even linebackers.

  2. That hair! I knew him from church when I was a young teenager and he was coaching. Really a nice, encouraging role model for me.
