Good morning!
Here is card #6 for 6 days to go!…

In 1989 I was 24 years old. I was so excited that someone from a neighboring county had just been named head coach of the Georgia Bulldogs. Ahhhh, youth.

Ray the player … a true DGD.
Ray the coach … never should have gotten the job. He was a recruiter and had never even sniffed a coordinator/play calling/game planning role. The best thing I can say is he modernized the offense with Zeier, Hearst and Hastings and signed Kirby Smart to a scholarship.
I remember being mad Ray Goff was named head coach. I held a grudge from UGA football camp when I was 12. Goff was an ass to the campers. He didn’t know how to adjust his level of discipline based on the age of the kids. When we were all together as a group (kids 8 to 17/18 years old) sitting on a field listening to Coach Dooley talk Goff would walk around with a tennis ball and peg kids with it who were talking. For older kids, fine, but I remember he drilled some kid near me who was about 8 years old. The kid was whispering to his friend next to him.
The breakfast we went to my roommate and I somehow got left behind in the dorm that morning when the coaches were gathering the campers to walk over to eat so we were the last to arriving to the dining hall. I was wearing a hat to hind my massive bed head at the end of the line to get food. Goff called me over to the table he was eating at from the food line and asked me why I was wearing a hat. I told him why and he responded by telling me, “we don’t wear hats indoors.” He then told me to do finger tip push ups and go halfway down and hold it. He made me do that the entire breakfast and didn’t let me eat. When he finally let me go he said, “I bet you won’t were a hat indoors again will you?” Thanks, Ray. Way to be a hard ass on the campers who weren’t even in middle school yet.
You can tell I have gotten over, huh…lol?
Goff’s time as a student overlapped with mine. I interacted with him on campus a few times (nothing confrontational, just being in the same place at the same time) and if no press was around he would be a jerk.
Got very riled listening to Kirby’s postgame comments after losses in 2016, particularly the dumbass losses to Vandy and tech. His repeated “we’re gonna go out, work hard, get better” coach speak made me think oh shit, we have hired Ray Goff again as it sounded just like him.
Extremely thankful that has been proven not to be the case.
The whole hiring process that picked Goff was a cluster staring with being a committee hire.
