Good Monday morning! Headed with the fam to Panama City Beach today for an overnight stay, some seafood and some oysters on the half-shell. How do you like your oysters? Raw with horseradish, lemons and crackers? Baked with cheese… or fried? I mean, I like’em most any way (except steamed) but, just give me a bag of oysters and a shucking knife, I don’t need anything else, straight out the shell! With an ice cold beer… ahhhh.

Well, we’re in the teens. 19 days left. Here is card #119:

  1. Have eaten them every whichaway, but always liked them raw on a Premium Saltine cracker with my homemade cocktail sauce.

  2. A shout for my favorite oyster place: 167 Raw on King Street in the Holy City. It’s not inexpensive or rustic, but your belly will thank you. Accompany your selections with a glass of Charles Towne Fermentory Sun Gazer hazy IPA. Chef’s kiss for the pairing!

  3. My favorite way to eat oysters is to leave them in the store. Pyburn was drafted by MLB and the NFL, that’s rare company.

  4. Navy Cove boutique oysters @ Ft Morgan peninsula, AL — gettem at Jesse’s on the Bay. Fresh, clean, hand grown in the clean waters of the Bon Secour bay.

    • Had them at Jesse’s Friday night. Also, the best grouper I have had in years.

  5. I prefer them raw…usually naked but sometimes with a small drop of Tabasco and a saltine.. However, if you ever go to Acme Oyster House or Drago’s in New Orleans, you must try the char-grilled oysters. They’re gently grilled with garlic butter and parmesan cheese. There is an Acme in Destin, not too far from Panama City. Re: Pyburn, when I was SID at Augusta College (now Augusta University), our baseball team hosted Georgia and Pyburn hit the longest home run I ever saw at our old baseball field. It landed on the roof of a warehouse beyond center field…had to be close to 500-feet

Boss Oyster in Apalachicola used to have the best oysters, but sadly, just like the oyster beds in the bay in franklin co, they are gone… all you Atlanta jokers think about that when you are watering your lawns….plenty of blame to go around as the bay was also overfished… hoping it will come back

  9. Loved them raw as you describe but unfortunately if you have certain autoimmune issues raw oysters can literally kill you so I’ve had to abstain for 30 years now. If they were to determine my morning latte can kill me I’m going down with the ship.

  10. I like my oysters raw with maybe a little hot sauce. No saltine needed because I’m eating oysters, not crackers. And no ketchup, either. Hunt’s, in Panama City has always served me great oysters.

    With that said, I went to Shellfest in Athens earlier this year, ate about 6 dozen fresh off the half shell with nothing added. Unfortunately, I got a norovirus and was sick for a week. So I’m not eating uncooked oysters for the time being.

  12. You can have mine. If I’m at an oyster roast, I’ll make it a point to eat one, well done, after several beers and covered in cocktail/hot sauce to mask the flavor.

  13. When I lived at River Mill apartments Jeff dated one of my next door neighbors. He seemed nice enough at the time. My recollection is that he was a better baseball player. But I’m old so I could be wrong. It might just be that with Buck Belue and Herschel up next, 1980 takes up more room in my brain.

  14. I remember that Jeff Pyburn started the 1978 win over tech but struggled. Toward the end of the first half a number of the fans were calling for Jeff to be replaced by Buck Belue. Ultimately Belue did replace him in the second half and engineered the game-winning drive in one of the greatest comebacks in UGA history. I heard that Jeff was a really nice guy, but he just seemed to be snake bit as a quarterback.

    That night after the tech game, I was talking with my parents back in California and my mother was upset that the fans had been booing Jeff Pyburn, and felt sorry for him. I had to correct her and tell her that they were not booing him, they were Belue-ing him. In any event, Jeff was a DGD but just didn’t seem to have a lot of luck.

  15. For a while prior to COVID, I could buy them by the dozen at K Rogers for six bucks a dozen. We’d throw them on the smoker over some hickory chips and my wife would do a horseradish/cocktail/lemon thing on them that was divine. I can do raw, but smoking them and allowing a few beverages to settle in was a winning combination. Can’t eat them fried though.

  16. I haven’t been to St. George in many years but I loved stopping in Apalachicola for oysters…raw and naked…just some lemon
