Beck vs. Bobo

I’m just going to throw this out there…

Imagine you’re on an offensive squad that watched as QB1 held out for the longest time before announcing his return, watch him get the biggest NIL deal on the team, see his distractions with social media blondes, all the while you’re hoping that the team favorite – Stockton – is about to get his time. In the weeks following you see the media fawning over QB1 and all of the anticipation of a Georgia offensive juggernaut because he’s coming back.

Why did Arian Smith suddenly get over his case of butterfingers the second Stockton was put in the game against Texas? Why did Etienne seem jazzed when Stockton made his entrance against Texas?

Just a hypothetical…did Beck ever have the room? He seemed to have a good relationship with Tate and Cash, but outside of that, did the offense not want to hustle with Beck on the field?

This is probably just conspiracy theory level wondering, but the more I see little snippets of items on social media that there were “chemistry issues” on the offense this year makes me wonder.

I’ll hang up now and listen,

  1. Our 20 year olds aren’t any different than anyone else’s 20 year olds.

  2. Yeah I don’t like when people do stuff like this. It’s speculation of the worst kind and it’s projecting and taking a lot of liberty with very little to no information. I think the Beck narrative is one of the most bizarre run away trains I’ve seen in a long time. From fans making an issue out of what he drives to making Stockton a hero for supposedly driving a beater. Freaking out because he was caught laughing on the sideline during a loss when we have no idea what was said at the moment. Making leaps about the team supposedly playing harder when he went out. It’s bullshit in my book. I have no idea. That’s all I know. Beck is gone now. People wanted him gone all season and now he is. Seems like they could just be satisfied with that. I have defended Bobo but it’s gonna make Bobo look like shit if Beck goes somewhere else and lights it up. I appreciate his efforts as a Dawg and have no hard feelings toward him.

    • Agree with you, but this is an amalgam of everything I keep seeing out there among the talking heads. The only people who know are in the locker room and Kirby has them on lock, which I believe is good culture and the right thing to do with managing players. IMO, Beck is making the right move, and I can’t fault him because he’s taken a hefty amount of grief this year for things that are most likely beyond his control. Given he needs to repair his arm to improve his draft stock and he can get paid while doing it, who can blame him? Doubt we’ll ever know the full story, but the quicker we can close the book on 2024’s offensive mysteries, the better.

      • Gunner Stockton is about to start getting the Georgia quarterback treatment. I hope he’s ready. I’ve already seen people saying they want Puglisi and we should t have let Rashada get away and the loss to Notre Dame is Gunner’s fault. It ain’t GONNA get better from here either. Stetson wasn’t celebrated long after the NC in ‘21 before fans were calling g for him to get out of the way. It’s deranged.

        • Dead on, Mike. Stockton is already getting the Georgia QB treatment by many here even. You’d have thought he was Buck Belue with his one completion the way people ragged on him.

I don’t know if he’s the answer or not. I don’t know if the players liked Beck or not. I really don’t like speculative stuff that has no basis in fact because all it does is tear down.

          “I’m not saying your sister’s a whole, but….”

        • I hope we’re no different than other fans in regards to quarterbacks. I hear lots of people from all over the fan spectrum say the backup QB is always the most popular guy on the team. Hopefully, the benefits of being QB1 in Athens, GA greatly outweigh having to listen to old men gripe!

          • I don’t know how it is other places. What I do know is Aaron Murray had trash dumped in his yard by “fans” who were mad that he had a bad game. Jake Fromm’s parents quit coming to home games his last year because of the stuff they had to hear. People wanted JT the whole time Stetson quarterbacked us to our first title in forty years. Then as soon as the confetti was swept up they thanked him and wanted him to move on so Beck could be quarterback. Beck got treated like shit all season. Now Gunner is already being blamed for the Sugar Bowl. Is it like that everywhere? I do t know. Maybe all fans suck that bad but I know a bunch of ours do.

          • Mike totally agree you. I believe that is the reality for every team with championship potential. Yes it sucks and I can’t stand it that we’re not above it. Support your team or STFU.

    • Lots of jealousy the minute he bought that Lambo from fans. I doubt anyone expected the WR group to lead CFB in drops or the OLine to at times forget to block. Seems everyone expected at Beck to bail them out of their own problems. He never complained publicly at least. No question there was an energy boost after Beck went out in the SECCG. The team needed change. I might be in the minority here I believe if he was able to start against ND we win. I wish him nothing but the best going forward DGD.

      • I don’t know if we beat Notre Dame with Beck simply because of the horrible blocking.

        • I think we beat them with Beck. Because ND’s defense would have respected his arm more and the running game would have benefited….it was advertised everywhere that Gunner is a runner…(and he really isn’t)..So ND focused on stopping the run, they ran defensive alignments to stop the run and dared Gunner to throw the ball. With Beck in..they would have had to play more honestly.
          I’m worried about next year.
          Our offense has become Auburnesque.

  3. Yes, this is conspiracy theory. These guys do not want to leave bad plays on film, especially ones like Arian and Trevor who hope to play in the pro’s. Not to mention getting your ass chewed out during Monday film study.

  4. I have no idea and refuse to speculate on this. Early in the season, before the drops became laughable, Beck played like he hadn’t been in the film room doing his job. I don’t know if that’s the case, but I’m going off what my eyes saw.

Bobo did not have a good season this year. There is no doubt about that … the offense was very good last year. There’s a lot of blame to go around for the offense’s performance. The slow starts and the early game turnovers gave teams the ability to play us the way they wanted. Slow the game down. Make the game 4 quarters, and don’t give a team with superior depth the ability to suffocate you.

In summary, there’s plenty of blame both ways. We used to blame the coaches exclusively because, well, they’re making the money. Now, we’re going to see more blaming the players especially those who command big dollars. Perform or feel the wrath. These guys aren’t young men playing for old state U anymore.

Good luck, Carson. Hope you find what you’re looking for, but just not at our expense. As a member of the UGA Alumni Association, remember to “never bark alone.”

  5. I’ve never had any ill will against Beck.

However if we need 2 NFL Rookie offensive player of the year candidates to make our offense work with Bobo we are in deep doo doo.

    • Not necessarily two NFL rookie sensations, but playmakers and at least WRs that don’t have 4 key drops per game would be nice. Is Bobo a premiere OC? No, but he has proven he can move the ball and score points when he has the talent to do so. This season with the drops. OL issues, and injuries at RB I don’t think even Monken would have had a great year.

Bobo has been OC, what10 seasons? He has had four really good offenses, two good ones, two mediocre, and one bad on in 2009. 2012 to 2014 and 2023 were very good. All that to say he is a solid OC. I think Georgia could do better at that position, but I don’t think Bobo was the main problem either.

  6. I would have thought that this take died in New Orleans. Had we won OR looked good on offense maybe this navel gazing would be worthwhile.

  7. If we follow this logic, anyone who played left tackle must have really hated Gunner.

  8. Beck’s gone, let that boy be! There’s a reason why he did what he did and none of us know. There’s no way in hell I’ll believe that every kid that lined up on that field with Beck didn’t give their best damn effort to win. They might not have jeehawed with him, but they damn sure didn’t play less because he was out there. Now with that, I do believe that he’s leadership style hurt. He had no confidant swag that illuminated to his teammates that said, let’s go boys, we got this shit. But that was just his personality. Here’s to you Carson, go be great son. Thank you for your time and dedication to the Bulldawg Nation.

  9. Agree. He showed sideline fire during the bama comeback. Think us fans were frustrated all season? Can you imagine how any QB would react with the blatant drops, poor blocking, loss of key receivers, etc.? I think this take on social media that “Beck didn’t have the focus/leadership” is grossly misplaced. It was everyone else who left him on an island. Quick who was the one receiver Beck could count on when he needed it? Exactly…

    • Agree. In addition to the drops, lousy blocking, etc., I’d add poor coaching.

And to those who say we lost too much talent; that’s also on the coaches. They recruit the players, and decide who plays and who doesn’t.

    • That was a reply to me. Really not a fan of using Jetpack app. Hope the site tech issues get fixed like our offense in the offseason.

  10. Was Beck part of the problem? Absolutely. As was Bobo’s play calling and Kirby making some head scratching calls and the WRs dropping balls and not getting open and the TEs whiffing on blocks and the OL’s inability to open running lanes or protect the QB (looking at your Searels) and the injuries at RB and the failure of the DL to set the edge or stuff the run and the inability get pressure on the QB and the linebackers being out of position and the DB’s inability to cover w/o committing PI and the entire defense’s inability to tackle. Of the main actors in this drama, only The Thunder from Down Under and Woodring get superior grades.

Face it folks, we were DAMN LUCKY to get to where we did this year with how we played. The number of points scored in the first half is criminal. The inability to put away far inferior teams was maddening. That cost the younger guys valuable playing time that will come back to haunt us next year. The stat that I kept bringing up about our RB’s being 15th out of 16 teams in the SEC in yards PRIOR to contact is unheard of at Running Back U. There were times when the defender almost was there to take the handoff. Some days the defense looked like 21 and 22 and other days they looked like they were a mid level ACC bunch. Why? How much do we miss Boom and Brown?

What will define Kirby as a coach is how he responds to the problems. Some hard decisions will have to be made on coaches and players staying or going. There will be some feelings hurt if he does what he needs to do. As mentioned by eethomaswfnc above, it used to be the coaches that were getting the big bucks, and the players were just college kids playing for pride. Now the players are not “college kids” but rather pros in every sense of the word. With the money comes the ruthlessness of pro sports. It is no longer a sport but a business, and with that the bottom line is all that matters.

  11. TDawg,
That’s what the coaches might need to start stressing to the players. “You’re ass is making bank, play like your worth the investment”.
