A reader sent the below, as I have no helpful info, I’m throwing it over to the horde to help out:
Otis trying to firm up some travel plans for Austin Tx and was looking for opinions from the group. I don’t want to get in the F1 madness in Austin and was looking at the wineries, breweries and distilleries in the Texas hill country. Flying into San Antonio on the Wednesday before the game. Anyone have recommendation for New Braunfeld, Dripping Springs or Fredericksburg. Thanks
Go Dawgs
I trust some of you can steer him in the right direction?
Go Dawgs!
North of Fredericksburg near Burnet is Torr Na Locs winery. We were there in April to see the total eclispe and fell in love with the place. It is quintessential Texas hill country with a beautiful view overlooking Lake Buchanan in the distance. Classy but not haughty atmosphere and family owned. I asked our waitress about the owners and she said she and fellow employees absolutely love them and what great people they were, thought that spoke volumes when your employees speak that highly of you. The wine was great too!
If you’re staying out of town:
Distilleries – Garrison Brothers (only the top ones are good), Dripping Springs, Treaty Oak (good live music too), Deep Eddy.
Breweries – Jester King, Livewood, Vista. But find a Pinthouse Electric Jellyfish in town before you leave. Life-changing.
Can’t help on wineries, as I’ve only been to one and that’s Fall Creek (it was pretty good though, for Texas).
No matter what or who you do while visiting, enjoy and leave with no worries…now if you require lawyers, guns and money upon your departure, that is a whole different destination venue…GO DAWGS!!
I lived in Laredo in the late 90’s and spent some time in San Antonio/Dallas/Austin areas so my intel is outdated. The only recommendation I feel safe making now is to go to the Greene Hall (oldest dance hall in the U.S.) website and buy tickets for a show. I did the lifting and there is one on Thursday the 17th. There is one on the 18th too but not the type of show I’d personally want to see there (Sixpence None the Richer anniversary tour). Go Dawgs!
Should be Gruene. Damn autocorrect….
Phonetically correct, though.
Wine…in Texas?! Pfffttt. Spend your time sampling bbq brisket.
Dawg in Austin offered a good list. I’d be sure to hit the RiverWalk and Fredericksburg. The back way to Austin is via 290…check out Rebecca Creek distillery just north of SA. New Braunfels is OK to kick around. You might try Austin on Thursday or Friday night. The F1 crowd is at the track and select parties but plenty of places to catch live music. Some great restaurants in SA.
If you do hit New Braufels check out the Gristmill Restaurant across from Gruene Hall.
In Dripping Springs check out Desert Door sotol if you like tequila. Also, you can catch a filming of The Drinkin Bros podcast and get some Hard AF seltzer. I think someone already mentioned Deep Eddy.
Lots of wineries in Fredericksburg One has a white rhino. Also, there is an elephant sanctuary in the area. You can pay to ride one.
And if you don’t mind driving a little bit farther check out http://friobatflight.com You won’t believe how many bats come out of the cave!
Thread H/J….Stetson fucking Bennett! 🤪
Such a Stetson moment. And the fact it was 4th down and goal with less than 10 seconds on the clock – also markers of a Stetson moment! He makes you pull your hair out, then jump up and down screaming like a kid on Christmas.
I just spent 13 years out in that miserably hot state and don’t want no more! Was nice to wake up this AM to 65 degrees and a beautiful sunrise over Mt. Yonah. You can do all of the above if you like that type crowd, but you would be remiss if you did not spend a few hours drinking long neck Lone Stars inside the greatest dive bar in Texas, Devil’s Backbone Tavern.
Play some Haggard, Jones or Jennings on the old juke box and let time slip on by…
Thanks for all the recommendations.
Last thing, if you have time head over to Lockhart and eat barbecue.
