As many here may recall, there was much debate about whether to hold a G Day last year, when several programs opted to either cancel their spring games or, at the least, avoid having them televised.
Why? Well, the spring portal, for one. Coaches were worried that the spring game broadcasts were serving as recruiting vehicles to find guys on the three deep who weren’t slated to start, but could be poached and brought over to programs through the spring portal.
This year, the spring portal is gone, but it doesn’t mean some of our Portal Masters out there won’t still try to sneak someone through the underground portal pipeline using the Conor Stalions method of roster management.
To help coaches preserve their rosters, the NCAA is stepping in:
I must say, those are pretty steep fines and penalties, and would likewise result in someone like Lane Kiffin or Ryan Day from seeing the field for half the season. That’s a lot of weekend hot yoga sessions for the Laner, who I’d imagine wouldn’t mind given the fact he was paid bonuses for not coaching a team who advanced further in the CFP than Joey Freshwater could’ve ever mustered himself.
I’ll be surprised if it passes as advertised, especially given the clout the B1G seems to have over much of college football, and how they likewise don’t even like to practice what they preach.
Believe it when l see it in action. That bunch from big? Won’t bite for that . NCAA has no nuts, but big? does!
Agree. The ‘investigation’ into a possible penalty wouldn’t be finished before the kid was at his 4th or 5th school.
Fined “20% of your football budget” – yeah, ADs will be lining up around the street corner to subject themselves to those sorts of penalties….
They’ll just increase the budget to cover that future penalty. A cushion so to speak..
The AD will be told to not use that surplus….. unless it’s for a damn good player or two.
And they’ll give some assistant coach the title “Head Coach” (in name only) to take the fall…even though his “Assistant Head Coach” would be the real guy.
“Ryan Day. Assistant Head Coach an an OSU”.
And the loss of 5 roster slots??? There are at least 5 names on every roster that seldom if ever see the field anyway.
(Yeah..this is hyperbole).
I doubt the NCAA will pass any of that.
Even if they do, it will be selectively enforced (just like always). The NCAA needs to dissolve.
It makes too much sense to be adopted.
They can always adopt it and then only selectively enforce it.
Like they do the rest of their “rules”.
Any of you remember the old Charles Atlas ads in the back of comic books? The NCAA is the wimp who gets shoved in the sand by the bully, buys the Atlas stuff, then comes back to the beach bully and…
…gets his ass kicked. So quaint they want to pretend to enforce rules now. Just another restraint of trade lawsuit waiting to be lost. Do they propose similar penalties for a coach jumping ship?
They ain’t figured out a way to bilk us out of all our monies for the Spring Game so they’ll invent reasons to just cancel them. Blaming poaching in Transfer Portal is just a lame example. Nobody cares what the NCAA says.
