Wednesday Wondering: Slice of Life

For today, let’s change the pace a little bit and think about the days gone by of sharing a pie, a pitcher or two, and basking in the sun of an outdoor pizza shop of your choice.

So…where’s your favorite pizza place? Where would you recommend a Refugeeto go for the best slice you’ve ever had, Athens or otherwise.

You already know I’m a huge fan of Sons of Italy Little Italy, but that’s mainly for the subs even though they make a great pizza, as well. In Atlanta, I’m fond of Fellini’s near Fernbank, but I haven’t been back in a while.

How’s about you?

  1. Fabianos in Newnan is my current favorite. I enjoyed the ultra greasy Rocky’s pizza when it was in Athens.

    • Lord, Rocky’s was awesome. I believe they operated in the same building that used to be Chow Goldstein’s. You could still see the train track near the ceiling where they used to run a toy train.

    • I have only had Fabiano’s once or twice and it was a very long time ago, but Positano’s is my go to pie in Newnan. Hands down my favorite pizza in Newnan and Peachtree City.

      • Partners (now a chain) has great pizza. They have two stores in PTC and one in Summer Grove and one in Arbor Place.

          • Driving through PTC tomorrow to eat at Hanna Bros. Never been there but I’ve heard good and bad.

  2. If you are ever in Perry, GA check out Ghost Runner Pizza. Owned and operated by some UGA grads.

Unfortunately, I can’t give any valuable feedback for Athens or Atlanta. I grew up in Atlanta, but was never a big Fellini’s guy. Pero’s Pizza was pretty strong at the West Paces Ferry exit of I-75 though. Haven’t eaten there in about 20 years though.

  3. Fellini’s on Ponce. Visited a couple weeks back and it’s still the best. Pie in the Sky in Kennesaw is also pretty good.

  4. Is Everybody’s on Clifton near Emory still around? It was darn good. Mellow Mushroom, now a franchise, was good on Roswell Rd. in Sandy Springs and on Pharr Rd. in Buckhead.

    • Glad you said that. Mellow is awesome. Athens, Rome, Cartersville…I just like it. Beer cheese w the crust is good too.

      • Peace, Love and Pizza is what Mellow Mushroom used to be (Even with a similar theme) when I was a kid in the 90s. A few locations on the northside, but the Alpharetta location is best. Excellent wings with a great buffalo/lemon pepper sauce.

        • I recently ate at a Mellow Mushroom in Enterprise, Alabama…so they’ve really expanded out from Emory.. Enterprise is a very nice city, BTW.

      • Well, some may find this absurd, even offensive..but I don’t particularly like tomato sauce or even marinara. So my go to is The Great White and add jerk chicken. You should give it a go sometime.

  5. Fellini’s has never disappointed me when I’m in the city.

    My family loves Antico.

Not sure if it’s still open, but I went Rosa’s down by Woodruff Park a lot when my office was down there. It’s as close to a true NYC slice as it gets.

  6. I lived in Syracuse NY for a couple of years. You could not swing a dead cat there without hitting a great mom and pop pizzeria. So for my money in the Augusta area, I like Monte Olivos in Harlem for NY style pizza.

  7. Fuoco vivo = Amsterdam
    Pizza Nona = Brussels/St Catherine
    La Pizza e bella = Brussels/Sablon
    Les Amoureux = Nice
    L’Antica = Bologna
    Fratelli Coppola = Lake Como
    Da Mario = London
    Pizzeria MaMeMi= Copenhagen
    Sartoria Panatieri= Barcelona
    Rockys = Athens, GA
    Gumbys= late night fix 😁🍻

    • Oof. Gumby’s. Where’s that TANSTAAFL coupon?

        • I worked at Gumby’s in grad school in the mid 80’s when they opened in Athens (owner was an FSU grad, or maybe a Gator). I delivered pizzas. Great college job. I was the hit of every party. Every drunken party girl was so happy to see me. Also, we’d trade pizza for beer with local liquor stores near closing time.

The $5 special was called the Gumby Dammit, small pizza and a drink.

From working at Gumby’s, I learned that I like generic pizza with extra cheese, ham, beef, green peppers, black olives, and onions. Also learned that pizza is incredibly cheap to make.

          • I had a roommate in Russell that ordered a Gumby’s pizza at least 3x a week. The problem is he never took the damn boxes to the trash chute. I’m no neat freak, but that made me crazy.

  8. DaVinci’s on Baxter Street in Athens was awesome. Deep dish pan pizza and pitcher’s of mixed drinks. None better. Hate it’s gone.

    • One of the Athens places that was outstanding. The lunch buffet at DaVinci’s was a deal back in the day.

For Athens, I still love pizza (and calzones) at DePalma’s.

    • I loved DaVinci’s back in the day. Boxcar was my go to for delivery. Chicago Pizza & Sports Grill in Smyrna makes a very good Chicago style deep dish pizza. Otherwise, I do love Antico and Mellow in Sandy Springs or Vinings.

    • That was gonna be my choice. Years later I went looking for it, but it was gone. Seems like it may have been turned into a strip club? If so, those jokes can write themselves!

    • LaRosa’s in Cincinnati with a sweetness in their sauce I’ve never found elsewhere. Best location is across the street from the Montgomery Inn Ribs King, another world famous choice and Graeters ice cream is now just up the street too. Throw in a 5 way Skyline chili and you’ve covered the Queen City’s most famous places.

    • Was trying to recall earlier…I’m 55 & used to eat at Davinci’s as a kid with my family after games, after we visited Bulldog Sporting Goods right down the street. Great memories & food. Thanks for helping me remember!

  9. Peyton’s Pie in Flowery Branch has been a favorite of ours since it opened. They share the building with a taproom and the “Greasy New Yorker” is tops if you are a pepperoni/ cheese fan.

  10. Garganos in Albany was good. When I was a kid, we would occasionally get the shrimp pizza, which was great. Closed now, but owner will open from time to time and invite old customers for pizza only.

  11. Ingleside Village Pizza in Macon, GA is my current favorite pizza. I go for the Ultimate Village, as I love a supreme pizza, and you can buy it by the slice all day long!

  12. In Athens, Little Italy. In Americus, Roman Oven, Pat’s Place. In DeSoto Heartbreak 280, In Tifton, Chicago’s. In Sylvester, Uncle Bill’s. St Simon’s, Sal’s.

    • We get Roman Oven delivered out at the farm. Can’t believe Anthony’s not open on Saturday!

Pat’s is a world class establishment & a great representation of Americus’ eclectic character.

I used to eat at a meat & three in DeSoto named Cut’s. Great food.

  13. I know it doesn’t exist anymore, but I still have my mug from Steverino’s from 30 years ago where I learned to drink beer out on the patio (and also saw McGwire break Maris’ record). I spent too much time and money there, but it was great.
