Eligible for a Discount

There’s much ado about the age of the Indiana football team with their 23 and 23 year old athletes, benefactors of a loose portal and COVID year exemptions. So how do we keep this new found strategy going once the COVID exceptions are gone?

Here’s one way.

So…we can play a freshman or JUCO transfer in nine of the games (isn’t that the number of conference games or something?) and then declare the year a redshirt year and get more time with him even after a nearly full season of play.

At this point, why not? Heck, give them two redshirt years while you’re at it.

Somewhere, Luke Ford’s gotta be pissed.

    • I’m guessing that’s the next court decision to come down. Why should going through the NFL draft end eligibility? Yeah, coaches don’t like the roster uncertainty but that’s it going to win an anti-trust argument.

  1. Geez Louise, play in 9 games and still redshirt? When I began following college football in the early 1960sa lot of teams played just a 9 game schedule for the entire season.

  2. Coaches who complain about having too many players to manage expand the “pool” of eligible players to manage….

  3. Good grief. Just give players 5 years to play 5. No medical redshirts and waivers for 6th and 7th years (or whatever it is).

Join the real world whether that’s in the NFL or in a real job.

  4. Mostly a boon for 3* kids. Not NFL ready or get turf toe in game 7 and you get another year. Coaches will figure out how to stockpile that kind of talent but an expanded roster is going to hit your NIL budget hard.

  5. Why not just turn CFB into the NFL minor leagues (MiLF if you will) and give unlimited eligibility and the ability to get sent down to the minors leagues to improve your skills from time to time?

      • I dunno. Courts blow up eligibility rules about having been a professional (and really, with NIL how are they not already) and I could see guys with eligibility years left coming back down. My understanding this is already being challenged in MBB with Euro players.
