Defensive journeyman Todd Grantham has found yet another home.
At some point, people have to figure out why he’s been around at so many schools, right? Mortensen won the head coaching job after taking over for Ty Detmer mid season, famously pulling the upset against then-number-22 Memphis back in October. Mortensen is the son of the late Chris Mortensen of ESPN fame.
Maybe Alex should’ve called Mark Richt for a reference first.
I’m glad he’s back in the game. Too bad it’s not at some place like Auburn or Clemson. I enjoy watching his defensive disasters. He lost me in Jacksonville doing the throat slash move. Just no class or very good at his job.
I don’t think Grantham is terrible as a defensive mind. I think his downsides are more in the personality aspect. But I think Georgia fans’ perspectives are a little skewed because we expected/hoped he would be a return to the Brian VanGorder level of performance after the steady decline of the Willie Martinez era and when we only saw modest improvement, it was a huge disappointment. Grantham obviously doesn’t measure up to what BVG did in 2001-2004, but neither has BVG since then. Georgia really never even got back there until 2021.
Third and Grantham is certainly a thing, though. That’s his biggest flaw from a scheme standpoint.
I think Grantham struggled to simplify things so the kids can play fast.
Knowing defense and knowing kids is two different skill sets.
The way Kirby and Pruitt owned a guy like Malzahn while others repeatedly struggled, imho, comes down to:
Who is able to distill things down to the most basic level so kids can play, fast loose and aggressive?
Grantham will give them a bump initially, just like he did us, but then all the complications start to add up and the kids tune out. Third and Grantham creeps in, and he’s off to the next stop.
He replaced Ty Detmer? I thought Trent Dilfer was the douche bag coach there that got canned.

Don’t forget that Gunner Stockton’s grandfather had a heart attack and died in the parking lot of the WLOCP after complaining about Todd Grantham. Is there anything that asshole can’t make worse…
