I’m Not Going to Play A lot for This Bowl Game

Man…seven teams, including Auburn and FSU, passed and said “nah, I’m good”. Cant blame them, if I’m being honest.

At least it’s a rivalry. I mean if you have to play a meaningless game, it at least gives it a bit of an edge. In Birmingham.

Meanwhile, what’s the over/under for opt outs on these games:

Or…

I mean at least they’re playing, No Turd Aim. Say what you will about the tenets of playing in meaningless bowl games, Dude, but at least it’s an ethos.

  1. I could see the benefit for a team to participate in a bowl game and evaluate next season’s players that have committed to staying, but as a college football fan, I’m probably not going to make any of these games appointment tv, unless it’s the Dawgs playing.

  2. I’m probably interested in Texas/Michigan to see the 2 QBs who are probably going to be the early betting and favorites for the most overhyped trophy in sports, the Heisman.

I hope Iowa’s defense puts Diego Pavia into the turf in Tampa. I could see Pavia pulling a Stephen Garcia the night before the game.

  3. Not sure if I would’ve used that background picture of the stadium for the Outback Bowl graphic – crowd looks a little sparse, to say the least…. (or more likely its just a foreshadowing!)

  4. Are the bowls getting killed worse than predicted? We always heard “protect the bowls” and it’s content for the World Wide Leader, but where the pads meet the meat, players can make more skipping them and don’t seem to care and it’s trickling out to fans. I watch fewer bowls than before the playoffs expanded, and, by fewer I mean I got to keep an eye on paint drying and settlement building in Fallout 4…

  5. Surely if a team opts out the conference will deny them their pro-rata share of revenue? Please tell me the bowl commissioners signed contracts with the conferences requiring participation/representation. And good grief, just load your freshman, walk-ons and 3rd teamers with a couple of cheerleaders and pep band on a bus and let them enjoy the bowl experience. The bad dandruff and ugly sport coat bowl organizers are in a panic. Given ticket prices and the economy we’re facing a lot of empty seats which means the pitch on how these games generate revenue for local businesses to offset the city’s expenses is going to get severely scrutinized. Auburn will always suck but their brand sells better than some 5-7 Go5 team.

    • Saw an article yesterday that Kansas State and Iowa State are both having to make $500,000 “make whole” payments to the Big 12/bowl games for declining spots (both teams are without coaches, one retired, one hired away, so understandable they would decline IMO).

  6. The destruction of college football continues.
First it was musical chairs conference re-alignments..
Then it was re-arranging even traditional rivalries to weird playing dates.
Then it was having the SEC baited into playing more conference games to ensure the conference would have 9 more losses and beat the hell out of each other (per CKS )…and he made great points.
Now it’s putting the conference championship games on the chopping block.
And the death of bowl games..which hurts hosting cities and teams not making the 12.
And we find out ND has a sweetheart deal with the CFP.
And the selection and placement process is just plain out a bag of shit….
Hunter Yurachek is either sporting a lot of jingle in his pocket today or he’s as dumb as a three day old worm.
He actually said that UGA’s and anOSU’s schedule strength were similar…and since the Buckeyes lost by a FG (to IU) they were sort of overlooking it….no mention that UGA lost it’s only game to Bama by a FG that CKS decided not to kick.
And his explained “reasoning” went down the f’ing hill from there.
Now we’re possibly if not probably looking at playing the Tide for a third time in a season.
As long as humans and not computers pick the teams, we’re going to have problems. We now know that UGA won’t be treated fairly (2023 setback after losing the SECCG..2025..”so what if you humiliated Bama…we won’t reward you for that but we punished the hell out of you for losing to them earlier by three…”
I’m happy the Dawgs are in and where they are…but it’s more evident than ever that the CFP’s are mostly made up and flatulent.

    • I expect them to use the fact that teams are declining bowl invitations as just another excuse to further expand the CFP. I suspect that the days of the traditional bowl game are numbered.

    • All of this is why I’m declaring victory for the season with the SEC title. If we do anything else, it’s just gravy. Suggest others do the same.

  7. Maybe Pavia can stop by The Villages to look at property for when his Vandy career is over…
