Wednesday Wonderings: Biggest Preseason Hot Take Faceplant

I’ll leave this here:

Flash forward to the most recent CFP projections:

So, in reflection, what was the worst offseason take? Which one are you the happiest to see come crashing and burning to the earth?

Between the Archduke hype and the Penn State downfall, I’m not sure which one I’m enjoying more.

  1. Upon posting the to early to tell Mickeys cfp Invitational, of the four with a bye week, a&m has a loss sometime, somewhere before the seccg, bammers vs the barners isn’t a loss for the bammers, maybe a scare….GO DAWGS!!

    • That sec qb1 chart, if dick wad pate flips the ranking 10-1, he really gets it closer to right, rather the popular picks, which goes to show, ya don’t know shit when the # 1 choice, now has an interim coach…#FTMF!!

  2. Penn State getting crowned > Arch’s Heisman. We had James Franklin’s body of work. Arch coulda lived up to what Kirby saw in him.

    • Agree completely.

I understand why Gunner wasn’t on this list. He hadn’t played enough games yet. But neither had Arch. And in what little game time they both had, Gunner had performed better.

Shame on Pate for jumping on the Arch Is The Second Coming bandwagon. But I will give him credit for highlighting his bad takes. Very few in the media will ever admit to being wrong.

  3. I wonder what Josh Pate meant when he said he’s ‘socializing his SEC QB rankings’ and who were his ‘select people’? He didn’t socialize with me, the snob.

    • A possible explanation.
“Hey, Josh..I have a friend you should invite to your party”
      “Really? What’s his name?”
      “Hogbody”
      “……..Uh……..Thanks but I’m good”.

  4. Shows how much he parrots the national media party line. That looks like a list created by the average casual.

The playoff list looks like it was put together my a media rating consultant to maximize viewers each round.

  5. I mean, you gotta include the pre-season Clemson hype in any such discussion. Most every pre-season NC discussion featured those three- UT, PSU, and CU- prominently alongside tOSU…

  6. So many get caught up in the QBs that have a big arm and can run. So few realize the ability to process quickly pre and post snap are what differentiate QBs. Coaches fall into the trap just as much as fans.

    • or can take a hit. Lil Stet was a football player. Gunnar is a football player. Beck is everything you want on paper but just a step behind as a football player and still only lost 3 games for us.

The margin is so small nowadays, when I’m looking for a QB – show me his mugshot and his girlfriend. Give me that Tommie Brady chip on his shoulder. Snake Stabler studying the playbook by the light of a juke box. Dave Greene with the Hobnail Boot. The F everybody lets roll!! guy! Yeah you’ll lose some games, every one of y’all can throw one back in my face, but get studs that are ball players everywhere and the analytics will take care of themselves.

To quote Chesty Puller: “Take me to the brig to meet the real Marines”!

    • One point to refine what you said – I don’t think coaches ‘fall into the trap’ because I don’t think that there is a lot of HS film where you can judge the ability to process reads. I think coaches think something like; “I can’t teach raw ability, but I can teach him how to process”. Arch has underwhelmed in the raw ability area so far.

  7. Anyone have CKS record when playing a team for a second time in a season? I’ll hang up and listen.

    • I just looked it up. Since Kirby has been at UGA, we have played 3 teams twice within a season: 2017 Auburn – we beat them in the SECCG after a regular season loss; 2021 Alabama – we beat them in the CFP NC game after losing to them in the SECCG; and 2024 Texas – we beat them in Austin during the regular season and again at the SECCG.

  8. I gotta admit, I don’t understand why Arch is so mediocre. His OL isn’t great (he got beat up at KY) but he just doesn’t make good throws. Plus, he seems to have a weird throwing motion. Overall, he hasn’t come close to even being a good QB, much less live up to the hype.

    • If he wasn’t Cooper’s boy, would Arch even get invited to the Manning Passing Academy?

  9. Listen to/quote/rely upon sport’s media representatives at your own peril.

Don’t pretend you shouldn’t know any better.
