Doing Dan Dirty – Friday Fodder for Filibustering

Honestly, after showing out at the Senior Bowl, this is kind of surprising. (Note…posts duplicated at the mirror site to keep open the discourse until we land on a fix)

Todays discussion point…which Dawg comes to mind as someone you expected to do well in the pros, but didn’t…or didn’t even get a chance?

    • I wonder what would have happened if he never hurt his knee his senior year. I loved watching DJ.

      • We probably go undefeated and get the Auburn treatment at season’s end. That Georgia team with Shock beats the living hell out of Florida.

        • We did lose to Auburn with Shock after he was back.

It was a fluke 4th and 13??? but still.

Last time the barn won in Athens. 2005.

That was the team that went down 28-0 to wvu and couldn’t come quite back too.

We were also lucky to survive that freshman back from Arkansas the week Shock went down. Damn that kid was electric.

Always thought 2005 was a lost opportunity. That was Texas USC in the Rose Bowl??

My soul is probably slightly better off not having finished undefeated and 3rd.

          • Yeah I’ve suffered through enough. To go undefeated for the first time in 25 years and be out in the cold watching a Rose Bowl decide it all without us is a bridge too far.

Can we get another athletic qb in athens tho?? Puhleeeze!!

          • Aaron Murray and SBIV were pretty damn athletic. Richt/Bobo convinced Murray not to run unless necessary because they didn’t want him to get hurt. Bennett wasn’t the body type, but he could run and throw.

          • I don’t mean marginally athletic. I mean “holifuk did you see what he did there!” athletic. I get that we’ve had a few who were somewhat beyond statues. Stafford was probably as good on his feet (and bigger) as those two.

I mean closer to Mike Vick than to Buck Belue on the continuum.

Stet, Aaron and DJ at their prime (maybe today) schedule a decathlon. Who are you taking? Is there a reason to even go through with it?

            I say its no contest.

    • A tad undersized to be battling NFL LT’s. If you’ll remember the NFL moved Pollack off the los for that reason. Jarvis needed to be more like Leonard Floyd and learn to play in space and off the los. As good as Nolan Smith is, he is mostly regulated to going against RT’s and playing on passing downs only. Running at him might be an issue.

        • I don’t recall seeing 3 on that side of the ball, but even so, doing it once it isn’t doing it all day. Nolan is just a tad wiry. He ain’t Myles Garrett.

    • I was pretty sure Fred was soft as tissue…

Might do well in today’s game as physical contact in anger is illegal.

  1. I’m just shocked that Dan didn’t get an invite. Dude played a lot of snaps for Georgia, shows out at the Senior Bowl, and doesn’t get a look? Bullshit.

    • Believe the next level scouts and gm’s had a pulse of the senior bowl, #17 made it on several scratch pads, combine is or has turned into a talking heads revenue stream for the network, nothing more, nothing less…he’ll get more attention at UGA football pro day (?), peeps are still preparing for the next level challenges/tryouts, if a UGA footballer takes/learns annnnnything from CKS, being disrespected can be a motivational speech…GO DAWGS!!

  2. Jarvis, Paul Oliver (RIP)-The way he shut down Calvin Johnson made me think he was going to be a good pro, Isaac Nauta just seemed like a guy that would blossom at the next level, Knowshon played pro ball but didn’t do what I thought he would, there are others but that’s who immediately came to mind for some reason.

    • I thought David Greene and Aaron Murray would spend more years wearing ball caps on sidelines. Didn’t necessarily see starter material but I thought they would make good back ups.

A lot of the guys who didn’t make it:

Shockley, Boss Bailey, Robert Edwards, Pollack and on and on failed due to injuries.

      A lot of the others:

Knowshon, Jarvis, Rennie Curran just didn’t have the size and speed to transfer to the big leagues.

Then there’s maturity and character and “want to.” There is no greater “law of the jungle” and “only the strong survive” than the NFL. Which stands for Not For Long if you ain’t got the required combo of mean mf-er and talent.

Btw, how did Marquis Elmore do in the league?

      • Rennie Curran came to my mind. Didn’t Knowshon win a ring with the broncos? That’s a pretty good consolation.

        • Maybe. He was just a tad slight for his style of running. He was quick, but not fast and he liked to run like he had power, though he really didn’t.

That play early in the 2008 Cocktail party kinda revealed the limitations that were there.

That doesn’t happen to Beast Mode. Not without a game stopping melee and ejections.

      • Little known fact: The Bengals invited Marquis to a private workout. He was running late and drove his car through the fence and wrecked into the blocking sled. Didn’t make the team.

    • Found this – Deandre Baker, a cornerback for the University of Georgia football team, was invited to play in the Senior Bowl in 2019 but declined. He was considered one of the top cornerback prospects in the draft.
      Why he declined
Baker skipped the Senior Bowl to prepare for the NFL draft.
He was considered a first-round pick.
      Baker’s college career
Baker was a consensus All-American and won the Jim Thorpe Award in 2018.
In his senior year, he allowed only 175 yards and a 40.2 NFL passer rating to opposing receivers.
In his four years at Georgia, he only allowed one touchdown.
He was named to the Second-team All-Southeastern Conference after the 2017 season.
      NFL career
The New York Giants selected Baker in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft.
The Chiefs cut Baker after two seasons due to off-field issues. In May of 2020, Baker was charged in an armed robbery.
