Let’s take us back to where it kind of all began.

Technically, he was right. There wasn’t a controversy, but there was a bit of a change at the position.
I wonder if Eason would’ve blocked as well as Fromm did for Michel’s game-winning Wildcat run in Pasadena?
What if…what if…
Rumors abound that Eason was more dedicated to the female ‘talent’ in Athens than UGA Football.
Well, who among us…
I don’t think I can blame the young man if that’s true. The UGA QB has to have access to much more and better talent than I had. And I’d say my days in Athens were quite good in that regard.
The same thing that happened to JT Daniels happened to Eason. He gets hurt, and, while he’s out, the team chemistry comes together with the next man up. The rest, as they say, is history. Of course, there were a lot of rumors that Fromm was pushing Eason throughout the spring and the fall. That’s where it’s different … SBIV wasn’t pushing JT leading up to the season.
To both men’s credit, they supported the new starter as opposed to today when the same player takes a redshirt 4 games in and jumps to the portal.
Maybe not pushing, but as I recall comments out of practice from the D starters was that Stetson was a beast for the scout team and coaches had him tone it down.
That was back in 2017 prior to the Rose Bowl when he was playing the role of Baker Mayfield.
Stetson had already been a starter in 2020, got hurt in the FU game and lost the job to JT. People in 2021 were not clamoring for SBIV over JT.
People will always clamor for the backup. And if the backup actually moves to starter for any reason, all the rumors start to appear about the previous starter.
It’s been that way at every school since some professor first inflated a pigskin.
Pardon the nit picking, but your statement assumes we would have been at the Rose Bowl had Eason been the starter. I know, I know, we’re all speculating. 🙂
Also, on Sony’s wildcat run it looked to me like a few Oklahoma players made a business decision. After the blocked field goal we were gonna beat ’em one way or another.
Hence the what if, what if…maybe we run the table, maybe we lose at Notre Dame. Time and chance, as they say.
Kirby deserves every benefit of the doubt in roster management but the QB position has been…interesting?…his entire tenure. Hoping the choice is perfectly clear this Fall.
Sorry, but what has been interesting? Let’s go through the years.
2016 – Lambert starts the UNC game, and Eason takes over pretty much in game 2.
2017 – Eason gets hurt vs. App State. Fromm plays well and becomes a Freshman All-American.
2018 – Fromm has his best season. Justin Fields never shows on the field that he deserved to be the starter over Fromm. Fields leaves when he’s given a free pass to transfer by Sasser.
2019 – Fromm is never threatened as the starter.
2020 – Jamie Newman transfers in and then never plays a snap. D’wan Mathis starts against Arkansas and is relieved by SBIV, who plays until he gets hurt in Jacksonville. Mathis is ineffective in relief. JT starts the rest of the season, and the Dawgs don’t lose again.
2021 – Daniels starts against CU and gets hurt in practice leading up to the UAB game. SBIV starts the next game and plays well. JT returns vs. USC and Vandy and plays well. He gets reinjured at Vandy. SBIV takes the team over and wins the locker room. National champions.
2022 – SBIV unquestioned starter. National champions.
2023 – Beck wins the job in the spring and was never threatened.
2024 – Beck is the unquestioned starter. Something happens, but we’ll never know.
so what your saying is…Kirby is a bad, bad mofo
My friend across the pond, all I’m saying is there has rarely if ever been a time when there hasn’t been a clear QB1.
You could make the case Fields deserved more snaps in Jacksonville after the LSU game in 2018, but I’m still not convinced that was the answer. You could make the case that Kirby should have started SBIV in the 2020 opener at Arky.
This idea of Kirby mismanaging the QB situation just isn’t bound to facts.
I am just very glad S. Bennett was on my team. He was a football player that refused to get beaten.
Sports talk bloviators always want to create controversies where there aren’t any. Fromm and Fields is a prime example. Fromm was good at UGA, Fields wasn’t. End of story. Fields had one good year at anOSU. That’s the extent of his on-field achievement post-high school. SBIV won the starting role – twice – because QB1 was injured. It happens. I never saw controversy or questionable roster management in any of this. In fact, I’d say Kirby and staff have done a good job plugging in disparate parts at the QB position and almost always getting good to very good results.
