Apparently, we weren’t the only ones observing that Auburn had surprisingly good stats with Net YPP metrics that should’ve translated to a better win percentage. One thing was for certain, it wasn’t because of defensive shortcomings.
Auburn brought up the rear in turnover margins for 2024, and offense couldn’t get out of its way to put together a really good game outside of the Texas A&M upset. Hugh Freeze and company took notice that one thing was worth preserving, and that was defensive competency.

Makes me wonder if Schumann and Smart are about to hit the negotiating table…or maybe they need to see how 2025 with a little more beef and talent across the defensive line will translate on to the playing field.

I suspect it’ll be around late March/April. Traffic has slowed considerably since season’s end…and that’s understandable!
Whoda’ thought that a teams suckass offense could get the dc double raise…as Bluto would say “nice work, if you can get it”….#AUBURN SUCKS!!
I’m a big believer in coaching salary raises occurring for one reason only – someone else made a better offer to the coach. Given the regression of the defense last year in Schumann’s first year as a solo DC, I’d be surprised if someone offered Schumann a lot more than he’s already getting. But I still think he has a great future as a DC with us, and this year should show improvement.
As for Durkin, he’s always been a great DC, but I do find it interesting that the market shows he’s already fully shed his Maryland catastrophe. Not many coaches can pull that off.
I hope you’re correct about Schumann. But my fear is next year will look a whole lot like this year across the board, not just on defense. I find the lack of turnover in personnel quite concerning. I believe several people should have been encouraged to move on. We need a new line coach, new receivers coach and Schumann either needs to be replaced or forced to accept a title of co-defensive coordinator and some new blood brought in. Kirby and company are among the best recruiters in college football but the environment is changing at an exponential rate. Letting your friends hang around too long can cause lasting damage to a program.
Let’s see how these next 2 weeks transpire with regard to staff changes, but I agree it’s time for change. I want Coley to stay, but there is ample evidence Searels isn’t getting it done with recruiting or developing. I also think Kirby plays a bigger role for Schumann this year. But most importantly, the LB and DB rooms will be more experienced than they’ve been in the last couple of years. And we have some new creatures on the DL that should perform at least as well as last year’s old underachievers did.
I find the lack of turnovers generated by our defense concerning. Turnover margin has been an emerging problem since the 21-22 run, more on that later this week…
True and I would also love for someone to look at games where Muschamp wasn’t supporting his son versus those he was more dialed in on a game day. (GS is fine but Muschamp is elite)
There is no problem in their athletics department that Barn thinks can’t be solved by just shoveling money at it. It’s the only tool in their toolbox.
I’m not surprised he’s getting the new contract. When only half of your team is performing well, you have to do what you can to not lose that edge.
Auburn is going ”all in” with NIL and salaries. Alabama, you have one job. One fucking job.
