I ran across an article over the past week that rehashes a nearly 20 year old story of what was a remarkably American intersection of college sports, administrators, privilege, race, class, corruption, injustice, prejudice and social activism. The most surprising thing about the whole incident is how transparent it all eventually became. Not surprising for me was that everyone’s presuppositions turned out to be entirely wrong.
Women DO lie about being victims, including assault and including those of a sexual nature.
District Attorneys WILL knowingly prosecute the innocent for political gain.
It matters a whole lot that you have lots of money to pay lawyers if you find yourself in the crosshairs and as a consequence of that reality LOTS of poor and powerless folks go to prison, or worse, under similar circumstances.
In short, a lot of folk’s arrogant confidence in their own world views about a whole lot of things were exposed for what they are: nonsense.
If we could learn from these instructive events and be more skeptical about people, systems and their inherent motives, we’d all be a lot better off. Finally, you can never go wrong if you are following this bit of wisdom nor is it ever too late to start.
Discuss.
The part I hate the most is that it happens to someone every day and people that lie about it make it more difficult for real victims to come forward or be taken seriously.
We’re living in a day and age you are guilty until proven innocent.
Yeah, the last 12,000 years or so have been tough.
Coming out of the ice age gave humans a new perspective .
I’m having trouble commenting on this post.
Crystal Mangum made the accusation in 2006. In 2007 the state’s Attorney General Roy Cooper dropped the charges and exonerated the three men, declaring that the charges never should have been brought against them. The district attorney on the case was convicted of criminal contempt and disbarred. The woman is serving time for a 2013 second-degree murder conviction for stabbing her boyfriend. We live in a system where anyone can say anything. Anyone can sue anyone else at any time for any reason. Even if that reason is simply to harass them and make them spend time and money. But, it’s still the best system of government ever designed in the history of the world. It does depend heavily on honest, good people. We don’t have enough of those from time to time. Like now. In this case, the truth came out. Crystal was just the last to admit it. Hopefully, she is getting right with God.
Has Nifong apologized?
This story made me angry, sad, and depressed. To say the least, it was upsetting. I know women that are victims of sexual assault. I would dare say that if you know 20 or more women, you likely do as well. They may not talk about it, but it is more common than you think.
I will just say that wrongly accusing people of crimes and using such things for political gain, it simply disgusting.
This was a fun rabbit hole.
It’s easy to be judgy from the sidelines of history but even I know drug addled strippers aren’t the most stable people. This Nifong cat is truly an idiot.
Nifong knew exactly what he was doing. And wanted to get away with it.
And yes, the stripper is the least interesting aspect of this entire thing, save eventually acquiring the rare decency to apologize.
She could have stuck with her story and said “it was all rigged!!! They weaponized the system, killed my boyfriend and charged me with a fake hoax murder!”
“Nifong knew exactly what he was doing. And wanted to get away with it”.
Exactly. Using the stripper to try to pull it off makes him an idiot.
I’ll take a moron over an evil fuck. Less dangerous, usually.
Looking at Mr. Nifong the two aren’t mutually exclusive. 🙂
It’s not our system of justice but our failure in execution due to the inherent flaws of humans. Evil exists everywhere. Some want to reform the system under the premise that no innocent person must ever be convicted even if it means the guilty escape justice. Others want to toughen the consequences of being found guilty in the belief it will be a greater deterrent and accept there will be mistakes that need to be corrected. Both are right…both are terribly wrong. Our focus should not be on the justice system itself but on the education and creating better environments to help prevent all but the unreformable to enter the system in the first place. On all sides. Can we do that? Yes, at least as a guiding principle. Will we do that? Up for future generations to decide. Our generation is certainly not setting any of the proper examples beyond what not to do.
‘Better that ten guilty persons escape than that one innocent suffer’
Sir William Blackstone, 1760
Modern day libtard and so-called “reformer.”
As long as people are greedy, short-sighted, and easily manipulated “tough on crime” will always be a more fruitful tack for a politician in a quest for power than fairness or justice or prevention or anything else that might actually do some damn good.
The sole reason our criminal justice system isn’t more of a shit show?
Juries.
It’s reported that 1 in 6 women will be sexually attacked in their lifetime: https://rainn.org/statistics/scope-problem The women that come forward MUST be heard and their cases followed through without prejudice. That said, Nifong is/was a media attention getting tool that must have discovered his “delight for the limelight” while working on the Michael Peterson case. Fortunately, Justice eventually found her way to his door and he has been disbarred. The monies received by the lacrosse players in settlement is a pittance when compared to the damage done, IMO.
While we’re on prosecution this week, in 2019 FBI agents raided the home of Jeffrey Epstein, and later his private island, and confiscated hundreds of CDs, hard drives and other media. https://www.the-independent.com/news/world/americas/crime/jeffrey-epstein-ghislaine-maxwell-new-york-fbi-b1971344.html
According to reports, Epstein had cameras in every nook and cranny of his residences to capture any tet-a-tets going on between any of his guests. I have a couple of questions for the legal minds among you.
1. Does law enforcement review captured materials such as these and look for evidence of crimes?
2. If there is suspicious activity, how do they proceed?
I’m happy to see any political figure of whichever stripe to be exposed in this conundrum. I just don’t want the evidence to disappear or be used selectively against one party because the head of the FBI, is “my guy.”
The trouble is that whatever is on the Epstein digits, they likely have key powerbrokers from both sides of the republicrat party in compromising positions. I suspect that anyone charged will be of those that the consigliere’s from both wings agree should go down.
Does beg the question as to why Maxwell didn’t try and burn the whole thing down in exchange for walking away.
You perhaps think that the legal system is able to keep people safe while powerful people want them dead? Let’s ask Jeffrey.
No, I just wonder if all it what its claimed to be:
A satchel full of blackmail material on LOTS of people, why didn’t Maxwell use that leverage? Or perhaps, she did??
Maybe an independent counsel should dig into all of that an issue a report?
Maxwell knows the first time she uses the info will be the last. Epstein proved that even being locked in a secure facility does not guarantee safety.
With regard to an I.G., local idiot savant MTG said it best here: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/nov/19/trump-cabinet-gaetz-marjorie-taylor-greene
“Let he among you without sin cast the first stone,” or call for an IG investigation.
Wouldn’t you rather just have Mossad use their footage to blackmail everyone it can?
Every allegation of crime should get the attention it deserves. When I saw the reports of how long the ACCPD wasted on the woman who reported that recruit I just shake my head. The Winston situation in Tallahassee was silly as well.
“Why did you leave the bar with those three guys and get in a taxi to go to their place?”
“I was scared.”
Sure. And then she got on the back of Winston’s moped while he drove her home.
I understand why things need to be taken seriously when perhaps they weren’t at one time in the past. It happened for DUI’s as an example. On the other hand, I don’t get the need to over correct to “believe all women!” when clearly some are totally full of shit.
To Kill a Mockingbird, by what was that dude’s name??, hates women I suppose. Tom was faking that hand injury!!
Also, I wish someone would get some damn sense and separate types of sexual assault in a way that makes sense.
Example 1:
“I was jogging at 530, he jumped out of the bushes, held a knife to my throat and…”
Example 2:
Two drunken adults argue about whether she did or did not consent and how clear it was or wasn’t communicated and there was no weapon and no injuries.
The charge in both instances?
Rape in the First Degree.
How that makes sense to anyone is beyond me.
Derek, Wow! Two conversations for the price of one.
1. It makes perfect since that Mossad is tickling the right people with their knowledge to keep Jarrad’s plan for condos on the Mediterranean in play. The annihilation of the Palestinian people is just a bonus.
Maybe there could be a “raped by bad judgement” charge which would be resolved with a fine. “Honest your honor, her mouth was saying ‘no, no, no’ but her eyes were saying ‘yes, yes, yes.” I’m not sure how your “consenting drunk adults” sorts out the use of GHB to make one of the adults consenting.
I have no idea how moving a chiffarobe got involved in the conversation.
The book revolves around a false attempted rape allegation isn’t it?
Yeah, I was just pokin’ fun and I always liked the word chiffarobe.
TBH when I read the article a thought was “Whoopsy! Store brand Atticus Finch tripped on his shoelaces…!”
Chiffarobe does sort of roll off the tongue.
These types of accusations work especially well when the accused is a person(s) that people are already predisposed to dislike. I was living in the Triangle when this happened, and I remember thinking “A bunch of rich, white, Dookies took advantage of a stripper. They’re already arrogant assholes, so this tracks.” I’ll readily admit now that I fell into that trap of stereotyping the players without having any knowledge of who they were.
So when similar accusations come out against athletes, such as Colbie Young, a lot of people will jump on board because it’s those damned privileged athletes again who think they can get away with anything.
At this point, I’m solidly in the “reserve judgment until the facts are all in” camp, but unfortunately I think I’m in the minority. Any time the accused it famous and/or wealthy, I’m immediately skeptical of such accusations. I can thank Duke Lacross and Crystal Mangum for helping to open my eyes.
Sometimes where there is smoke there is fire, and it’s burning uncontrollably and no one seems to want to take the time to call the fire department.
University of Michigan – 1,000 people reached a settlement for sexual abuse by the athletics department doctor.
Michigan State – Dr, Nassar sexually abused women’s gymnastics members for nearly two decades
Baylor – multiple rapes by football players and coverup by the coaches and administration
Penn State – years of pedophilia by a prominent coach and coverup
Ohio State – sexual abuse of wrestlers and coverup by administration and Congress.
Northwestern and Dartmouth have had to reach settlements because they ignored reports of abuse and harassment.
Even a drunk hooker could be telling the truth, “this one time.” Stemming the abuse as early as possible benefits all of society.
Selective prosecution w/ political bias….glad they fixed that 30 years ago…
