One of the most dramatic debates that currently underscores much of our political division these days is over this question:

Is our nation more dependent upon a commonly shared language, ethnic, cultural and/or religious identity, OR

Is our nation more dependent upon the twin values of capitalism and rule of, for and by the people found within it?

My personal belief is that history has revealed that the latter is the truth. If you are here, or want to be, expecting nothing more than political egalitarianism and an opportunity to exchange your talents and hard work for the well-being of yourself, your family and your country, this is the place for you. I can’t think of any personal characteristic that matters more than a firm grasp of those values.

Discuss.
