Monday Musings: Sticks and Stones

Kansas State decided to fire their basketball coach on Sunday, and they are getting out of the $19 million buy out by claiming cause.

If that was the case of termination, Brian Kelly would’ve never had a job in Louisiana as long as he did. Heck, Kelly’s not the only one.

One thing I can say that I like about Kirby, is that he doesn’t lose often. However, on the occasion where Georgia loses, he doesn’t make excuses and he owns it, even if it was due to a terrible game from a player or two. He didn’t waver when the criticism was being heaped onto Carson Beck and his receiving corps last year when there were some glaring shortfalls…but I’d have to say his language and tone probably shifted at practice, as we’ve all heard a time or a hundred by now.

But there’s the difference…you keep the criticism internal, you stand for your team in public, and what happens in the locker room and behind closed doors remains the business of those who put in the work, as a courtesy.

But regarding Coach Tang…is it enough to fire someone “with cause”. Or is this the delicate nature of contract language and attorneys (Tang plans to sue), and the razor thin difference between getting paid millions while sitting on a beach in retirement or exiting a program with $0.

Discuss.

  1. KSU didn’t want to pay the buyout so they come up with a weak “for cause”. I hope it sticks so UGA can fire Mike White when he admits his basketball team does not play well.

  2. That’s one reason why everyone absolutely loved playing for Bobby Cox. I’m sure he lit into players who made stupid mistakes or didn’t play hard, but he did it out of the public eye. You almost never saw him rip a guy in the the media. Most coaches who do that sort of thing are the type whose ego won’t let them take responsibility for their shortcomings.

  3. “If it went good y’all did it, if it went bad I did it.” I remember Coach Bryant saying that and it’s been a pretty good ethos over the years.
