If you thought this season’s College Football Playoffs Brought to You by Disney+ was long, brother, you don’t even know what’s coming next.

Now here’s the catch…for no explicable reason, the quarterfinal begins on December 30th, completely skips New Year’s Eve, and resumes on New Year’s Day. What was it? Ratings? People were having too much fun celebrating the Eve and not watching the Ohio State/Miami tilt? Was it because of the success of the Pop Tart Bowl’s ratings (played on December 27th)?
Rather than the Semifinals being played a week later, they are playing two weeks later and playing the Championship game eleven days later (similar to this year)…nearly into February.
To put it another way:
Lord, something’s gotta give.
But, but, but … muh brackets!
When this thing goes to 24 (because Disney and Fox will pay for it), it’s going to be ridiculous.
This thing should have never gone beyond 8. Change my mind.
Right there with you. With the prolonged CFB calendar and the insatiable appetite for CFB, why can’t a developmental league flourish? I say bring back JV football and play it in the spring vs spring practices. Since NIL is dumping all over the student model, have it rostered like the NFL, the HC has to declare 52 players consisting of freshman 45%, sophomores 35%, 15% juniors and 5% seniors, the emphasis on develop of 3rd teamers and beyond. 8 game schedule starting late March and finish with a championship on Memorial Day. More CFB, more ESPN content, more TV revenue.
I don’t hate it…
8 was always my preference.
4 was never going to work because having conference champs not make it just felt bad and stupid.
8 was, imho, perfect. Every conference champ and 3 at large.
No byes.
Also, round 1 same day as Army Navy. Fuck that stupid irrelevant boring shit show of a game.
1 or 2 week break TOPS for exams (lol) and Xmas.

I wanted top 8 by a BCS type of ranking (or champions only but that would have required radical change to conferences). Now that we’ve had 12, I would agree to your 8 proposal just to get the field right-sized. 5 conference champions – Power 4 + highest G5 with 3 at large. This year that would have been:
Indiana
Georgia
Texas Tech
Tulane
Duke
Ohio State
Oregon
Ole Miss
If they went back to 8, you realize it would be Power 4 + highest G5 + Notre Dame (if they have at least 6 wins) + 2 at-large.
It’s like every level of every sport wants to model the NBA/Hockey season model.
8 would be great! You must win to get in. Slots and places left for teams that muddle thru season can go to another bowl or go home. The regular season must continue to count! But, as we know, $$$$$$ is the goal!
If that’s not a tell sign for playoff expansion nothing is. Stretch the calendar, then backfill.
The longer breaks between the playoff games gives more time for the networks to spew their narratives and drive more clicks on the interwebs between games. Also, they can get more advertising dollars with the drama they cram down the throats of those foolish enough to tune in to their muck. (Apologies, Muckbeast!)
Way too f-ing long a season. They don’t need 3-4 different 2-week breaks in a year. There’s a solution to have it end on NY Day or the week after at worst and they won’t take it.
