A bit of a buffet today.

To start its good to see that Pelosi finally deployed the National Guard into D.C. as we all know that’s the only way it can happen. 

Also, these sorts of domestic deployments would be scary…but only if it were imaginary. 

Next, this person is clearly a whack job!!

This entire other person seems rational though.

Full transparency is going so well that this federal judge, in legal words at page 20, found that the gubmit is totally fos. 

I’m not concerned though because these are serious people.  Really serious.  Totally.

We can’t build phones, drones, aircraft, or just about anything vital to our national interests without Chinese materials like rare earths. We’ve alienated even our closest allies, and they have few alternatives other than turning to China. AI, which can’t spell the word ‘blueberry’ or accurately list states that have the letter r in their name, is not the magic pill speculators envision.

    I say all that for those fools who continue arguing over politics. You’re driving the nails into your own caskets.

    • Is your point that arguing over politics is a waste of time? Are you suggesting we march on Washington to demand change?

    • AI is getting better and more dangerous by the day. It’s definitely not the answer, it’s the threat. Yeah, it might not be able to spell, but it can code, and it can write, and it can bullshit better than most politicians, and it WILL take jobs.

      • In a capitalistic economy the idea is ROI not preserving jobs. If AI can do things quicker and cheaper than an employee, then that’s good for everyone.

        There are issues/concerns with AI to be sure, but creating efficiencies ought not be one of them.

        • Let’s assume you’re correct that efficiency is better, but it won’t be better for the people who just invested $10,000 on a now useless degree. However, my main fear is that it will be used by people like Elon Musk to control the messaging. Many people have repeatedly proven that they’re incapable of critical thinking, AI can be used as one more tool to control the sheep.

          • You don’t need AI to manipulate the sheeple. We’ve seen that.

            I do think AI could be used to maximize the effectiveness of bullshit.

            In terms of displacement due to advancements in technology I think we have to accept that.

            I’d be in favor in repurposing displaced labor for various infrastructure and beautification projects at public expense, but the bean counters on Wall Street aren’t going to allow it.

          • I haven’t messed with ChatGPT. In life I tend to be a luddite who thinks that the Unabomber may have had a point.

            Hence, I avoid as much technology as I can possibly avoid until I can avoid it no more.

            Intellectually I know advancements are good on balance but personally I really hate to have to use them, unless like I say I have to or they are really easy and convenient to use.

            I’m not someone who is interested in the next gadget or technological advancement at all. The possibilities do occasionally intrigue me but asking a computer questions isn’t one of them.

            I don’t think ICE is deporting very many gubmit employees. A few subs I would imagine but I suspect that most ICE deportees were employed by private entities, who btw will not suffer any costs for having enticed them to our shores, because as we’ve made clear if you’re rich you get a pass. If you’re poor you are fucked.

It’s programmed to give the user fawning, obsequious responses while giving very confident answers regardless of their accuracy. Lazy people will love it because it does their thinking for them.       All persons, citizen or not, are due due process in this country. That means I’ve got to have a reason to hassle you, because of your 4th amendment rights(note it’s importance by it’s priority in the constitution) before I can impede your travel.
      I remember when the Magna Carta was being written :~) that there was a clause in there about a man’s home being his castle, which literally meant that if you could make it home the authorities would play hell serving a warrant until you came out. Maybe this was when “house arrest” was invented. That’s how strong the anti-king sentiment was at the time.

      The point us crazy loosey-goosey liberals are trying to make is that rounding up groups of people based off of their color and then shaking the group to see if any criminals fall out has been wrong since 1215, or 1776 depending on your point of view. Following the constitution has worked pretty well for us these first 250 years, can we try it for a while longer?

    For a start, last week’s 2 minute hate was all about some poor innocent US citizen who was minding her own business and “snatched” off the street by the evil ICE Gestapo. She said so and the gullible legacy media believed it, so it was no surprise we got a link to a Guardian article about the particulars of the news item. Lo and behold, within days we find out what actually happened; Ms. Valez and her accomplices were impeding and interfering in the lawful execution of arrest warrants for illegal alien criminals by ICE, then ASSAULTED the ICE agents and were subsequently arrested. Their citizenship did not factor into their arrest at all. But hey, it’s a good progressive talking point, so who cares about accuracy or truth.

    Now we have Derek and his minions lamenting the attempt to enforce the law (legally and Constitutionally) and stop the rampant crime in our Nation’s capitol, all while ridiculing an individual who risked his life to stop the carjacking attempt by a gang of criminals and possibly save the life a young mother and her children (even while knowing that another individual doing essentially the same thing in NYC days earlier had been fatally stabbed). When the left tells you who they are, who they defend, and what amuses them, you should believe them.

    Whether it was mass deportation of illegal aliens (remember Maryland Man?), the Aurora, CO apartment takeovers (it was only a FEW), the From the River to the Sea anti-Semitism college protests (Genocide!), tariffs, and now the pearl clutching, sky is falling performance art regarding federalizing the law enforcement in DC, DJT has managed to get the progressive left to align with the 20 side of every 80/20 issue without doing anything other than announcing he is in favor of the 80 side. The progressive reflex to be against ANYTHING DJT is for has driven the left to clown car status, their constituency abandoning them wholesale, and their approval ratings dropping faster than a sailor’s pants in a cathouse. But by all means, please continue. I am sure that defending criminals, foreign or domestic, will turn out to be a winning strategy for the left. And if DJT ever comes out in favor of breathing oxygen……………..

That a judge decided to give her a break and dismiss the charges in no way proves her innocence. Again, you and the Guardian’s original outrage was based on lies. At this point, that’s about all the left has.

          Judges do not have the authority to just dismiss cases that haven’t been tried. If the gumbit wants a trial, it gets a trial. It may or may not win, but it gets one.

Nevertheless, the fact the charging entity (DOJ) rather than the judge dismissed the case has no bearing on the fact she was impeding a lawful arrest, assaulted an ICE agent, and charges were originally brought (she wasn’t innocently walking down the street minding her own business and snatched). But it did give you an excuse to be pedantic and insulting, and evade my original contention, that the left defends criminals, foreign and domestic. There is no doubt that this administration (the implementation of Project 2025 & diversion from past sins like the Epstein files) will provide a columnist rich, almost hourly content. The rat-a-tat of rapid fire B.S. will do its work to send the average American into a coma until that sudden awakening when the question becomes, “how did we get here?” Like the meme says, “I voted for the racism, not to lose my job.”

    My question today is for the legal scholars in our midst. Now, it’s true I can’t swing a dead cat at Thanksgiving dinner without hitting a a lawyer, but the question I can’t get an answer to is, “how is what’s going on with the universities not just outright extortion?”

    My simple understanding of the law is that to bring a suit, one party has to prove an injury by the other party. If Biff and Missy didn’t get into an Ivy League school because a more/equally qualified minority was chosen in their stead, will these students receive recompense from the government as a result of the administration’s suit? Isn’t that what the DEI suits are about? If so, is there a trust account (as in most suits) set up to ensure the proper payment to the injured party, or is that money just being converted to Bitcoin?

    The other suits seem to hinge around the free speech issue of whether or not Muslims are allowed to call out the Israelis for genocide in Gaza. It seems like the government wants to punish the colleges for allowing free speech. Are those damages being channeled to the Israelis in the form of support, or just the Bitcoin account?

    I don’t think there has been any “woke” suits yet, but I can easily imagine them coming. I can see Harvard taking another big hit for their Hasty Pudding Theatricals. If that happens, will all of the straight people in America get a dollar or so?

    W.Cobb Dog points out very accurately that we are losing our edge in almost everything. Disrupting education, not attempting to be that “shining light up on a hill” that attracts the best and the brightest from all over the world, while not offering equal opportunity to our homegrown talent seems like an absolute recipe for disaster. Is the “Whitening of America” truly going to be “Making America Great Again?”

    While I contemplate martial law here Nunsuch, I await your response.

    • Lawsuit abuse is very coercive and was used tens of thousands of times by Trump as a private citizen.

      If you owe a contractor 50k, don’t pay him. Offer him 15k on flimsy excuses and make him sue. He’ll settle for 20k when he realizes what his lawyers are costing him and that he can’t get lawyer’s fees as part of the judgment.

      In public office, its basically the same thing. You use financial leverage to get what you want because your target has to balance the costs of fighting vs the costs of just bending over and taking it.

      Bastards take advantage of that leverage. Is that legally defined as blackmail or extortion? Probably not.

      How many plaintiff’s lawyers are shaking down an insurance company for 15k for a client with a scratch? How many insurance defense lawyers are billing on cases they could settle today rather than fight?

      How many city’s police departments are handing out marginal DUI’s, speeding tickets, failure to yield, yada yada, simply to generate revenue as the cost of paying the ticket is a fraction of the costs of fighting?

      The legal system requires honorable people in it for it to work in a fair way and that’s just not what we’re putting out there.

      Honorable people are seen as suckers and losers. The people worthy of adoration extract without any remorse or feeling.

      And no one notices. And no one cares.

      I hate to be cynical but as I age it just becomes more unavoidable for me not to notice this truth:

      Our institutions are designed to protect the vested interests and give the population the mere appearance of fairness and instill fear that without the institutions we would be victims of anarchy.

      In other words, you can’t trust your neighbors, your only hope is in those in power.

      That is not an unavoidable circumstance of an organized society, but its what you get when the electorate is incapable, for whatever reason, of asserting its rights to something better.

      The vested interests will yield to us just as easily as they will abuse us. Whatever extractions are allowed to pass without notice, they will take.

      • Damn Derek, I’m cynical as hell and you took me to a new place. You’re saying that any A-hole with deep pockets can use the court system to beat anyone into submission and that the court system as it is currently constructed will allow “frivolous” suits to continue to that end.
        Ok, I’ll accept your reality, but in my examples, where are the damages going? If we are to “follow the money” where do we look? Is there a department of the government that keeps track of the money recovered from suits, fines, etc.? If it went into someone’s personal Bitcoin wallet we should be able to track it, right?

        • Settlements are typically private and so who knows?

          Frivolous cases don’t get to judgment where you can see who owes who.

          The value in pursuing a frivolous case is extracting a settlement.

          Stating a legally sustainable claim that must be defended is not a high hurdle.

          Like the current wsj/Rupert case.
          Stating a case is not that hard.

          They will never win, but they can cause problems ($$$) and extract a settlement that they can wave around and say:

          See we were right!

          The public has no way of delineating amounts that reflect that the case was settled as a nuisance or on substance.

          One thing I know:

          Fox News paying 787 million is NOT a settlement for a frivolous lawsuit. That is: a “we’re about to be humiliating and go broke” settlement.

    Judges can dismiss charges in criminal cases on numerous grounds, both legal and procedural. Insufficient evidence to support the charges, lack of probable cause, violating the defendant’s rights, and illegal search and seizure are just a few. Since I never mentioned demurrer, I fail to see its relevance, unless you believe that is the only mechanism available to the judge to dismiss charges. If that’s the case, say hello to Motion to Dismiss. Wonder why they call it that? Do you understand yet that a judge CAN dismiss charges in a criminal case, or do you just enjoy getting your ass kicked by a one legged man. And it appears after diving down this rabbit hole, you have no intention of refuting or denying my original point, that the left is now supporting and defending criminals.       Judges cannot dismiss a case for lack of evidence until the case is presented at trial. Judges can dismiss a case for lack of probable cause evidence at a preliminary hearing, but the prosecution can still present the case to a grand jury and continue to prosecute. Probable cause is a very low standard.

      Judges have no authority to dismiss a case for violating ALL rights. Speedy trial? Rare. But sure. That wouldn’t be the case here tho.

      Judges can throw out EVIDENCE for violating rights, but not the case itself for that reason.

      Double jeopardy rights after prejudice had attached, but again that wouldn’t be the case here.

      A judge could throw out a case for not stating a crime like “the defendant is charged with bring a moron.” Or if the case was brought outside the statute of limitations.

      Any sentient being would know no judge was involved here though because of these limitations and a judge’s narrow powers to dismiss.

      You get an F in law as well as in citizenship.

          Would any rational being think the best explanation for that US citizen’s case not proceeding be:

          A. a lack of evidence so the government abandoned the case

          B. a judge just tossed a valid case randomly shortly after arrest?

          Any thoughts that it was B was nonsensical. It was also factually wrong. Being helplessly naive ignorant cultists is no way to go through life. You should all consider going on the rigorous journey of growing into fully informed adults. God didn’t give you folks the gift of a brain with the expectation it would be returned unopened.
